Rear Engine Seal Leak at 23k! May Not Be Warrantied?!

I destroyed a rear seal in my '86 Subaru beach wagon. It was 5 or 6 years old and had been on the beach a great deal at Hatteras and Ocracoke, but one particular encounter with a patch shin-deep sugar sand did it in.

Even with 10 psi in the 13" tires it bogged down and I was forced to pull up a little, back up a little, back and forth, back and forth, making a little ramp a few inches at a time, all the while dragging the skid plate and armored exhaust back to the plain old soft sand. The best guess is the sand was forced into the seal while backing up after the skid plate filled with the fluffy stuff.

I got out without using the snatch strap (or calling for a $200 tow) and the extended warranty covered the repair minus a little deductible.

Lesson learned. Pay better attention when driving alone on a dark beach with no help in sight.

Good thing the extended

My rear main seal is leaking pretty bad. 53k miles. Going to the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks for the info from everyone. I’ll keep you posted.

Went to the dealer this morning. After putting it on the lift they agreed it was the rear main seal. Siad they have the part in stock and they will get to work on it under warranty. I'm still under 60k powertrain warranty. They offered me a loaner and said it should be available tomorrow. So far so good.

Final Update. Picked up the 4Runner from the dealer. Rear main seal fixed for free under warranty. No hassles. No issues. Drove home and no leaks.
