rear entertainment system remote control

Hi all,

We just got a used 2007 4runner that came w/ the rear entertainment system. We probably would have opted for an aftermarket one if we bought new. But hey, lemons and lemonade, right?


Unfortunately, it did not include the remote control. As best as I can tell, that DVD player *must* be controlled via the remote control. Everything I see in the manual and on the navigation system indicates that I cannot control the DVD player via the touchscreen in the front.

I suppose my first question would be: Is this correct? (That one must use the remote control to control the rear DVD Entertainment system?)

Assuming it is correct, I've read online that Toyota is mighty proud of this remote and sells it for $180-$400 depending on which post you read. Luckily, one can get a remote on eBay for $30-60 depending on the auction.

But does anyone know what kind of universal remote might work w/ this? I tried one and it didn't work. But it's gotta just be a re-badged JVC or Sony or Audiovox or something, right?

I just picked up a oem remote on eBay for $10. Does it need to be programmed to the vehicle or should it be ready to work?

Just some things...

Unless you're talking about something different that I've never heard of... the system that came with the 4th Gens was a rear seat audio system, not DVD.

You are correct -- it uses a small remote (about the size of a deck of cards) and there is a display on the overhead light.

The only way to hear the sound system was through special headsets which had to be purchased separately from the Toyota dealer (which was always a point of contention for me... we bought the first 03 that the dealer had when it came out, ordered two sets of headphones, but when they finally arrived the dealer had no record of us paying for them (and somehow our paperwork didn't reflect the purchase. But I digress...)

One thing I've never seen written anywhere is if the headphones used some sort of proprietary Toyota network, or if they were the same frequency as some other common unit, like Bluetooth for example. I do know that GMC and Cadillac offered a similar system in their vehicles; possibly those headsets would work.
