Rear hatch handle replacement

I have a 2007 4runner and i have had no problems with it. I washed it regularly and i noticed that the carwash soap somehow reacted with the rubber piece you use to unlock the rear hatch. This is the one like a handle which when pressed harder activates a switch that released your rear hatch.

It got gooey a little and then finally during the summer months it melted with drips around the chrome bar on the top of the handle.

Now when its really cold, its frozen like a rock which means i cant press it hard enough to open the rear hatch.

I have a repair manual and i cant seem to find that particular part. How hard is it to replace that one and does the back of the hatch have to be opened to replace it?
