So far have found this

Someone on Yota-Tech used these guys and it was $60 plus shipping (both directions).
Huge PITA, but def worth having useable hatch lift struts for less than $368 (plus tax)...
Can't seem to find anyone in the US that does this kind of work. Opportunity knocks for someone out there!
All I've read about re: aftermarket are that they're $35-40ea and are wimpy.

Contacted them and w/ the 4runner.org discount the price dropped to $106.34 ea

So, I think I'm going to try and have them rebuilt.
Since there's a def lack of solutions to-date here (and at Yota-Tech), but there appear to be others with the weak lift strut issue, I'll report back and give y'all the skinny...

Ok - here's some data as I've just spoken with Frank Irvine, owner of Strutwise up in BC.
They can be located at this URL: http://www.strutwise.com/
He rebuilds the hatch lift struts and has done a few for the 3rd-Gen 4Runners.
Charge is $35 CN per strut, you pay to ship both directions (he'll add the return ship cost to the total for you).
Can use UPS (via a carboard mailing tube) to ship from the US, however Frank says you *have* to declare "no value" on the package, otherwise customs will charge you duty.
He offers a 2-year warranty on all his work.

Your sig doesn't say where you are and as you probably had the truck a while you may know this, but I'll add it anywaty. The lifts work very slowly in colder weather, here in New England I have to help the gate up all Winter, but it will stay up on its own. In the summer it goes up no problem.

In the coldest of winter (46 degrees), they are slow to open and in the heat of late summer (82 degrees) they are slow to open.
Just getting annoyed with having to assist them all the time and as I'm upgrading and replacing a bunch of stuff when it goes in for the 90k/mi service I thought I'd do these too...
