Rear hatch strut C clip?

So one of my struts is missing a c clip holding the pin on the body mount side of the strut. Talked to toyota and this part is not sold separately, they only sell the entire strut assembly. Anyone know if this is a common size c clip? Also anyone have luck with aftermarket strut assemblies, mine are definitely quite wimpy in the cold.

Yes you can buy replacements at any hardware store. I forget what size I bought, but if you bring the other c clip to compare you can get a good match.

Sure enough took some rough measurements, drive 2 minutes down there road and got the right part. Apparently they are actually called e clips and 1/4" was the size I needed. $1.25 for a two pack. Easiest fix I've done yet on the truck.

OEM ones are quite affordable now. Aftermarket does not come with the Pins or Bushings, so if yours are shot or missing, just go OEM and get it all fresh and new.

I bought some aftermarket and then a weeks later Toyota dropped the price on them. You can buy them much cheaper online than at your local dealer, but you might see if they will price match.

I have seen some good stuff about the StrongArm extra strength ones. They are also little more than half the price of the cheapest OEM I see online. I do live in CO and I think even new the OEMs have a tough time in winter but these get good reviews for cold climates and those with extra weight on their hatch. I've seen people make due with hardware store replacements for the bushings and I have the pins so as long as I don't lose those in the process I'm good to go. Also none of my local parts counters will match online prices for OEM even on their own website ><

I seen even good oem ones go limp in winter. Do the strong arm ones go weak in winter as well?

I did a quick search and found an older thread that states the cold weather spec ones do very good..

I have the Extra strength Strong Arms (#6815) and they kick butt in any temp. (They have two models). It gets pretty cold up here in the Pocono Mountains. They may be too strong, I can't close the hatch with one arm as I used to, unless I really strain. I have thought about trying it with putting an OEM back on one side, but I always have something else to do. These have been on since September 2017.

The OEMs were wimpy even when new. My hatch would hang down by maybe three inches (just enough to hit your head on) unless you pushed it up. With the Strongarms, it flies open all the way, even at -10°F.

We have the issue when it gets could they go weak. I am not a fan of using my head as a hatch stick..
