Rear Heat

I have a 2003 4runner (Limited) and my little girl is getting cold. The vents in the center console (facing back seat) is not blowing hot or cold air out. I turned the wheel located between the vent and you can tell its moving but very very little air blows out of the vents.

I had 2 other 4 runners and there was a switch to turn on the blower, but can't find one on this one.

What am I doing wrong :D Just traded my 2001 in on this one, and I still havn't found all the gagets.

Most of the heating through to the rear comes through vents under the front seats- have you got anything under there that could be blocking the vents?
 
I get air movement from under the seats but not much from the vents coming out of the back of the center console.


Probably stop by dealer and ask them if this is normal

did you select the setting that blows air only to the face? i had back seat passengers complaining of no heat as well until i pressed that little icon that shows air blowing only to the face, then the air came rushing out the vent behind the center console and gave me some happy, warm back seat passengers!

one of my pet peeves on the 4th gens.

the rear center vents are dependent on the front vent settings/blower. you only get air if the front vent settings are set to face or face/feet. and the velocity of the air is dependent on the blower speed setting also.

on the 3rd gens the rear heater had its own blower and settings independent of the front seats.

so on the 4th gens, you either roast the front seats to keep the rear warm or freeze the front seats to keep em cool.

this was a bad decision on the 4th gens especially for the northern states in winter time.

Ya that is one thing I don't like either, my old 91 Runner had a fan hi/lo switch, plus a heater slider for the rear passengers.

I was a little surprised when I saw that the 4gen didn't have this.

yeah, that is annoying. the only thing to do is to close off the vents and direct more air to the rear. reminds me of a home furnace system where you have to adjust the vent opening for each room!

my 94 4runner had independent rear heater... wish i had that in my 4th gen instead of the standard wireless audio system for which i never bought headphones for cause i have no kids!
 
Will that worked !!! but its a POS way of getting air to the passengers in the rear. The air still don't come out very fast even with it on high. My plans is take it back to the dealer and complain.

Toyota went down hill on this design. My old 2001 had a switch (hi/low) with a slide to adjust the tempture.

since we are on this subject. has anyone noticed when you shut off too many vents up front, do you get a whistle sound from the system?

if i shut off all but one vent to get more air to the back, it seems the shutter doors inside the dash to direct air tend to whistle.
