Rear Heater Option

I have a '99 SR5 3.4L Runner and in the back seat area there is a fan control with a temperature control as well. The intake for the fan is under the passenger seat and only blows the air onto the rear foot area... My question is how is the air heated? Are there coolant lines run under the center console so it would be heated just the same as the front is?

That is your rear heater, and it is a totally separate heating system from the front heating system. It does have a 2nd set of coolant lines running to a 2nd smaller heater core. These are a common failure point on older rigs that spend a lot of time in the salty northern areas.

LMAO! Yeah I'll admit I totally forgot to search it... Too involved watching the game and decided to do a quick post during commercial breaks. Thanks for the info though, I figured it worked that way.

I noticed you are in Maryland, not sure if they salt the roads up there, but if you haven't crawled under your 4Runner to inspect the lines, then you should do so ASAP. If you haven't used the rear heater, then no water has been flowing to them, but if your lines are rusted out, the second you turn on that heater, you will be losing a lot of water. A lot of member cut out the rusted part and replace it with standard heater hose and hose clamps.

That's a good idea, didn't even think of it. They do salt a ton up here... prob just as much as you all get so I'll inspect it tomorrow. I usually hose off my undercarriage really well though when they salt the roads so hopefully it'll be good. Gonna start running it from time to time now just to change the fluid out.

I just went out and checked mine; they are perfectly fine. The PO must have had them replaced because they almost look new to me.... good in this instance but I wish he had kept better repair records :mad2:
