Rear Liftgate Rust

I purchased a 2006 SR5 in December 2008 with 46K miles. I noticed a significant rust spot developing at the corner of the chrome piece over the rear license plate. I would have thought that it was "unique" to my 4R, but I noticed the similar problem on two others on the road this week. Does anyone else have this occuring?
I know, I know, everyone wants pics, I will get some up soon.

I had the same problem on my 2007 SR5. I took it to the dealers body shop and they repaired it under warranty. My rust was on the left hand side, bottom corner of the chrome liftgate piece. Wasn't very much at all, but if left would have developed into a much worse problem.

My dealer was very easy to work with....only problem was they needed 2 full days to repair since the entire tailgate needed to be painted to match and then the clear coat sprayed. The dealer gave me a Camry to drive while they had my vehicle. All of this was at no charge to me whatsoever, minus my time/ fuel to get there. On a side note, both my wife and I feel the runner rides MUCH better than the camry......surprised me.

I don't remember how many miles the corrosion warranty is but it's like 75k or maybe even 100k.....mine was at 38k roughly.


Take it to the dealer and get them to fix it sooner than later IMO.

Conspearasea, how many miles were on your truck when repaired? My dealership is giving me a hard time saying that it is beyond the 3 yr/36K mile coverage and the 60 mth/unliminted mileage warranty only covers if rusted completely through panel. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

I think I had about 38k miles....it was only a couple months back I had it done.

You are getting the run around I would say....the tech that looked at mine didn't even blink an eye to write it up. Why in the hell would they wait for it to rust all the way through would be my question. I don't have any pictures of how mine looked, it wasn't bad but would have become bad. I see no reason they wouldn't want to fix it early on to avoid more work later on.

There are others who have experienced this, I used that as "ammunition" when I got there even. But like I said, they never even questioned the repair or paying for my rental car.

Don't stand for what they are telling you! That is some BS if they won't fix it.

Find a new dealer.
