Rear Locker for 88

I have an 88 4Runner and want to do some modifications. The first one that came to mind was a rear locking differential. Are there any modifications out there for this idea or any of number processes I would have to go through? Any help on this subject is welcomed.

Many companies make lockers for the 8" Toyota axle. Which one you get depends on your budget.

Not sure what size the diff is. I know it's factory with the V-6 engine. Is there a mod for a 4Runner as old as mine(88) where I can switch rear lock on and off, too?

Another mod I was thinking about is a switch that can cut my ABS on and off, too. Is this mod similar to that of an 05 Taco? Reason I'm asking is my cousin did this mod and I liked the outcome.

It's an 8 inch diff. There are slight differences in design between the 4cyl, v6, and turbo differentials, but they're all the Toyota 8inch.

Whether or not you can manually engage/disengage a locker in the rear depends entirely on what locker you get. There are multiple kinds.

ARB air locker or a Toyota E-locker out of an 96+ Tacoma or 4runner.

ARB is for sure the recomendable one. It adds a selectable locker, and adds strength too. It is air activated by the push of a button, so you need an air compressor to create the pressure needed to activate the locker. The by-product of that is that you get your second mod, On-Board-Air for inflating tires, maybe small air tools. But it could be cost prohibitve, 800-1000$ for lockers, 2-400 for compressor and 300$ for install. But works amazing.
RD-132 I think is for 8" Toyota.

OX, cable activated. Read about it, never seen it. Seems to engage by pulling on a cable. I think some old land cruisers may have had a similar system.

ARB's are they way to go if you can afford it, next would be the Toy e-locker.
After that a Detroit is a good one.

i like not having to worry about electronics or compressors going out, or air/wires melting. therefore i say go with a lockrite, detroit, or an aussie locker. much cheaper and just as reliable options as the elocker or arb
