Rear locker/LSD on a 2WD?

Hi all, I'm new to the 4R scene. I'm going to be picking up a nice 2wd '99 LTD this week, and I'm curious if anyone has gone pre-runner on one and installed a rear locker; stock or aftermarket. I don't go off road, I'm just getting it because I need something bigger and more reliable than the M3 it's replacing. And I've always had a soft spot for 4Rs. I don't NEED a rear locker or LSD, but I figure it'd be nice to have when it snows...the three days a year we have semi-significant snow in Oklahoma. Thanks in advance!

Yes, some people do put rear mechanical LSD's in 2wd, its not as good as 4x4 and it will leave you wanting 4x4.

I have a Richmond Lockrite in my 2000 2wd 4 cyl Tacoma(7.5" rear end). Not exactly the same as a 4 runner but up here we get 5 solid months of snow and to be honest it diggs good in the snow, but it'll put you into a wall if you disrecept it and get the tires spinning.

I've never had a lsd yet, but I'd never put a full locker in for winter again. 0.02

Aussie and Lockright make auto lockers. They are the cheapest and easiest to install. Detroit makes the TrueTrac which is an LSD and it's not too much more than an Aussie or LR, but the install requires setting the gears up so that's another $300 or so.

Then there are the better but more expensive options like an ARB locker or an elocker retrofit. Both of which are selectable lockers (meaning they are either fully open or fully spooled at the flick of a switch).

Lockers are not good for the snow. They will cause the tail to fish all over. They are good for doing donuts. I had a 2wd Toyota mini pickup years ago. A good set of snow tires and it was almost as good as my 4wd in the snow.

Don't do a locker for snow travel.

I'm in the same boat as you. Love my 2wd 4runner but also wanting to drop in a OEM 4.10 elocker. I've found a few and now waiting to save up the money for it.

You could also put a truetrac LSD if you don't intend on wheeling it often and want more traction in inclement weather.
