Tried it agian sat for about 2-3 min and light just blinked never stayed on......i know one of yall has a rear locker anyone had this happen before???? im stumped.......

ok... you should just throw that axle away, its worthless now... tell ya what, ill give you my good axle, for your broken one... deal?

first, where are you trying to engage it, and are you in 4 lo? your tires might need to break free in order for it to engage, such as on a slippery surface where one would need a locker... more details of how you try to engage it and we can help you out

haha

haha nice try...but i think ill keep my prized e-locker..lol... i havent tried it again yet but im not THAT worried about it...id just like to know that it worked if i did need it

First off, Im BRAND NEW to the 4runner scene so please forgive me if I'm entirely mistaken here, but I believe mine has the "rear locker" on it, its a 2001 4x4 sport If by locker you mean the button left of the steering wheel that lights up orange on your 4x4 status display, then put your car in 4 wheel drive, then put it in neutral, push the locker button, and then put it in drive. sometimes I have to go from neutral, push the button, then into reverse and then drive, but if you engage it properly it should only flash for a few seconds (the time it takes for you to shift into the proper gear pattern). Hope this helps.

nope you dont have a rear locker... they didnt put rear lockers in 01s and 02s...

you have a center locking diff. the way yours works (mine too) is youre in awd when you push the button in. then when you lock the ctr diff it eliminates the rear bias of 4wd and makes it 50/50 front and back.

to have both would be best, but to have one over the other... its a hard choice, the center diff. is really helpful most of the time and gives you a 50/50 split in power, a rear locker would be helpful on anything you are heavily articulated on. so... if i had to choose, well i would take the center locker, because you can always add a rear locker for cheaper than you could add a locking cneter diff, but thats just me

if so, then why did Toyota make the switch? Were any 4runners available with both? thanks

i believe some limiteds between 98-00 had both?

not sure.

toyota made the switch (ie stopped putting the rear locker in) because suv's became more mommy friendly :(

if i had the choice id take the rear locker anyday. ill probably end up with a lockright at some point.

im not saying the rear diff isnt better for offroading, but atleast in the florida crap down here, you want a 50/50 split, you are mostly on level ground so all the tires are spinning anyways, but when you start getting tires off the ground is when lockers really help... i would take a rear locker any day also, but that center lock diff button allows you to drive in 4wd on the road, without hurting anything. find one with a center locker and then get an Ox locker or an ARB locker... or as lee said, a lockright

oh yea, i definitely appreciate being able to drive in awd/4wd on the road in any condition. in the northeast, wheeling with a rear locker is SO MUCH BETTER due to our mud, ice and snow... thats all.

I wish I had the multi mode auto in my truck since using 4wd on hard and just wet surfaces isn't that good for it. AWD is nice to have on days when the roads are just slick and I'm jealous when I drive my mom's '99 Limited and use the AWD.
