Rear locker question

I'm sure this has been talked to death here, but I can't find a lot of references to the debates. I have a '97 T4R SR5, 3.4 L, Auto tranny. I want to install a locker in the rear. I had a Powertraxx no-slip rear diff in my 2000 Tacoma, and really, really liked it. But I'm told that the PowerTraxx won't fit into the T4R. Is that true?

A dealer has suggested a Lock-Right instead. Anyone with comments about how well they work on a 90% street, 10% dirt/gravel application?

I just found out about Aussie Lockers. How well do they work a T4R like mine?

it all depends

There are many opinions on this, and I will give you mine.
I have had a CAR with a "lunchbox" locker (aussie, Lock-Right,etc. are generally referred to lunchbox lockers) and there were a few thing I did NOT like about it.
When it would unload in a corner, it would make a nice "bang" noise and I could feel the vehicle move a bit when it did. When this happened on slick pavement(rain or snow) I would spin out. Now the tires I had played a part (street/strip tires, it was a hopped up '70 mach1), but the potential is always there for loss of control on snow, ice, etc.
IF, and this is a big if, you drive mainly on the street, and IF you get snow in your area, I would strongly consider getting a switchable locker. Either the factory e-locker that came with many toyotas, or an ARB air locker. I know the costs are high on these, but to me it just makes more sense for a mainly street truck. Now if this is a weekend crawler and not your daily driving car, then a lunchbox is fine IMHO.

To directly answer your question, I don't know if powertraxx makes something for our vehicles, I would check their website.

Just to make it clear, I am not "dissing" lunchbox lockers. The reason they exist is due in part to the high costs on the selectable lockers. If we all could afford selectables, then we all would have selectables.:thumb3:

I would search the classifieds for a few weeks and see if you can get a good deal. You can also try HERE and do a search for the e-locker..I LOVE this site.
The only other consideration would be to match what your front axle gearing is, or change the front to match the rear.
