Rear locker???

No you don't. What you want is a decent set of winter tires. Locking the rear can make ice/snow traction worse than not having 4wd at all.

I just bought this 96 4 runner with 181 on it and here in Michigan the snow is wet and slick. I want a rear locker to help keep the tracton on the road as well as off-road. Help please I'm new to toyotas
Rear lockers are for when you get stuck and or crawling and tires coming off the ground. On the trail. Not meant for road. Really hard to get stuck and or tire off ground on the street. Issue is when locked both tires turn same time. So when turning your inside tire cant "open" and xfer power to outside tire. In snow and ice this will cause rear end to slide out. Not good for street like mentioned. Even worse when installed in front on street.

well since you asked about a locker for the road with ice and snow maybe you dont know how lockers work. Give the search function a try you will find plenty of info.
If you type (Site:http://www.toyota-4runner.org something) on google it will google search this site for the words you want, works much better than normal search.
what exactly did you even want to know about rear locker? your question was very vague.

Well, to be fair you did mention that you wanted one to keep traction for on the road as well. For snow/ice condition ON the road, that can be treacherous.
I didn't actually see a question in your post, so what exactly is it that you're looking for? Are you wanting to know what brand lockers are out available? What's the best, worst, etc.... ?

Sidebar: Am I the only one who cringes when they see a Lifted rig on "street" tires and wheels?
To the OP, I don't think you'll get very far in the trails with those tires, even with 4x4 and an E-Locker. Any plans to swap those out?

You originally ask for help then say you already have all the answers. What gives? Unless you goal is to do donuts a locker is going to be useless in the snow. If you are going to wheel it on the weekends you are going to care about the tires real quickly.

As others have stated, a locker will only put you in the ditch if you use it on snowy/icy roads. This is not what you need for driving on snowy roads. You need winter tires.
For off-road traction, you're going to want to ditch those "touring" style tires in favor of an A/T tire. While you're at it, you might as well get a smaller set of wheels to minimize damage and give you some sidewall flexibility. Do that first, then worry about whether you need a locker or not. You're not getting far off road with that wheel/tire combo.

Im gonna chime in here, lockers are great for the snow and ice! easiest way to do donuts and drifts with it :rockon:
but other than that its a pain in the ass in snow and ice for DD

No disrespect to the owner of that vehicle (but disrespect to the vehicle itself intended), but I laugh when i see crzp like those wheels/tires on 3rd gems, puzzy stuff.... :cowboy:
I am new to the Toyota world I came from a jeep back ground and I was sick of just emptying every pocket to keep it on the road. It is a 97 I miss wrote that and the plan is to sell those rims and tires for a set of duratracs and steel wheels. With further investigation on the rear axle it does not have a locker. I'm looking for a mechanical set up. Thanks
You may have wanted to state that from the beginning for a mechanical setup.

Best bet on an Elocker would be swapping the full rear axle out with a Elocker axle
