Rear Locker

What 3rd gen models have the rear locker? I'm familiar with the rare Highlander model, but I'm wondering about others. This is for a distant purchase - research. My wife keeps the 06 and I wheel a 3rd gen.

PS: I posted a while back about a 3rd gen for sale and got a lot of great answers. I forgot to say thanks to everyone who replied.

the rear locker was an option on all v6 4x4 4Runners from 1996-1999, and in 2000 it was only available on the limited 4x4s. In 2001 and 2002 only the center diff lock was available.

My girl's Runner is a 2000 SR5, and it's got a rear locker in it, so apparently it was not just the limited models that offered it as an option in 2000.

yes, they did come on "some" 2000 model,, the Locker was a dealer option if I remember right, that means they are hard (vary hard) to find.

Not exactly.
Mine is a 2000 with a rear locker, but it is not a limited. I think it is a "sport". I have a hood scoop, but no leather and no other fancy stuff.

If you can find a locker, or wait until you find one, do it. I really like having it. I try not to use it...having it as backup makes me more comfortable on tough obstacles. When I do use it, I swear it is a "magic button"

Owner's manual says only engage the locker when in 4L and do not drive over 5mph. Is this what you guys do? I've never used mine, but would like to know how when losing traction on snow and ice.

mine use to work only in 4lo not any more just ground 1 wire and it works in 2wd and 4wd think theres a thread around here some where also mines a 5spd too

To clear up here the locker was available in any 4wd 4Runner from 96-99, finding one in a 4 cylinder model is tough, but they are out there. They were available in any 4wd V6 model in 2000 but were no longer offered in the 4 cylinder for that 1 year for some strange reason. After 00 the locker was discontinued. Many Limiteds did have the locker as they tend to be loaded w/ everything, when I bought my 02 Sport every pre-01 Limited I saw had the rear locker. The locker is a factory option not a dealer installed option like the supercharger.
