Rear Main Seal Job

Hey guys,

Just noticed that my 98 3rd gen is leaking oil again. I've done valve covers before, and I did the oil pan gasket with the TB kit last year. Oil is kind of everywhere under the engine. Oil pan, tranny, starter etc. Seems like it has to be rear main seal. I lost about a quart of oil in 6 months or so. Nothing catastrophic. I know I can leave it if I want to.

But I'm still tempted to tackle the job. It seems like the only cost is a transmission jack and replacement seal. Maybe a big seal pusher. Is there anything else that's worth while to do if I drop the transmission? I'm planning to redo the tranny pan gasket and clean the filter. Maybe the exhaust manifold gasket. What else?

Rear axle seals are first so this is a ways off but I like to plan.

Make sure to use OEM seals.

Did you use OEM valve cover gaskets and circular seal at the back of each head? I replaced the valve covers with non-oem sometime ago and saw a leak between transmission and engine and I too was thinking about the rear seal and then I noticed those non-oem valve covers are leaking in the front of the engine and redid all that again with OEM. I don't see any new oil between the trans and engine.

No need to pull manifolds. Check the condition of heater core hoses and replace those as those are located behind the engine.

Pretty sure I used Fel-Pro. But I checked all around the valve covers and around the top of the engine bay in general and it's all dry.
