Rear main seal question

So this pertains to my 22re truck, but yeah, figured you guys could help. I just spent the weekend dropping a new engine in and was cruising through the fsm to read up in the order I should be reattaching things to the block and just realized I didn't put any grease on the inner diameter of the rear main seal. I guess I skimmed right over that section... So am I pulling the motor again or will it be fine? On another note of new engine paranoia, on the oil pan I used ultra black and I had a little bit squish out of the sides (probably 1/4 inch bead when applied) and I usually wouldn't care so much but I just dropped 2k on the thing and don't want to trash it. Way too worried about this thing...

Forgot to add that the engine had been run on a simtest machine thingy with oil in it and then sat on the engine rear end for two days wrapped in oil soaked gauze. Seal slipped right on so it's possible it had some lubrication.

If the seal slipped right on and you think you had some oil on it then you should be fine. But of course, there are no guarantees.

As for the oil pan: I use FIPG from toyota. It's a little spendy at $20 for a tube but it's the best sealant there is. But as long as your oil pan surface is straight and you let the rtv set for a few minutes before you tightened all the hardware then you should be fine there as well. At least the oil pan is an easy thing to take care of. A lot easier than a rear main seal.
 
So, is the consequence of no lubrication on the seal a melted/non-sealing seal? I'm just worried a little bit of oil isn't enough, but yeah I didn't have to force it at all. Just a little push.
 
The purpose of the oil is so that the rubber on the seal doesn't stick to a dry piece of metal and cause a small tear on the seal.
 
Okay that makes sense and for another stupid question, lol, does the seal only need lubrication on the first start up? Or every start up? Wasn't sure if after oil pressure builds it lubricates the area at all on its own. I've been seeing online that some people use marine grease and such, so a light film of oil seems inadequate.

Actually, if I had my 4runner when I did most of my back country travelling I would have had a lot more fun but less of an adventure. Since we sold the airplane, I have a hanger and two car garage fillled with three vehicles to break my back on. Luckily, I don't have to venture far before "having 4 wheel drive" offers an advantage. Nevertheless, often I have to remind myself what these "bucket of bolts" are for i.e. driving. As to pissing, my brother had a sink installed in the hanger and that suits me fine.

Your lack of care in the maintenance department really concerns me with the fact that you fly. I know that just about all work done on private aircraft needs to be inspected by a certified FAA inspector but things still come up for maintenance, hourly inspections and calendar inspections. I would hate to see you fly and lose power during a short field takeoff (or at any time) because of shoddy maintenance.
 
Well, I haven't been out if the garage too often since I bought this truck and it crapped out on me after 5k ish, right after I put 600 dollars worth of leafs, shocks and a set of new Michelins on it, it started knocking :/ And... I just pulled the engine (again) today to fix the rear main. It did have a good coat of motor oil on it, but better safe than sorry, so new seal and MP grease. Too me, fixing my trucks is a bit of a necessity because I can't afford 100+ an hour mechanics to do it for me. On the good days when I'm not fixing dumb mistakes, I rather enjoy it

Why are you on this forum? You do absolutely nothing productive here. All you do is wine about how others like to maintain their vehicles.

Uneducated morons? You sir sound like an uneducated moron. Supposedly you're a pilot, you should appreciate maintaining vehicles and aircraft to a high standard more than any driver. I just hope that one day when you crash your airplane because you had a flame out or some other mechanical issue, you are the only one that is hurt and you don't bring anyone else down with you.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of people on this forum have more education and experience than you. What I've found is that theres usually a lot of idiots on forums, but here, you seem to be about the only one.
 
And SV_Dude, thank you for the information. My understanding of vehicles has been self-taught (thank you FSM!) and has required a lot of trial and error, patience and yes, bloody knuckles to get it right. More than once guys on this forum have answered my stupid questions and helped me learn something new each time. So thanks again to those who like to help, its greatly appreciated.
