id do a little more investigation before i pull a reannt..there is a oil cooler on the drivers side under the exaust manifold that is notorious for leaking...the front seal as well... remove your crash pan and go to the car wash...clean the engine from top to bottom and watch it...
good luck

wow im glad you said that about that Oil Cooler because I think that is where my 4runner is leaking. Does it have a little round thing towards the back of the engine then a tube that comes down? I was looking under my 4runner yesterday and saw there seemed to be a lot of oil coming from right there. How bad would it be leaking from there?

the oil cooler is just a can that runs oil around the coolant ...it seats against the block and is sealed by an o-ring type seal much like an oil filter...if you remove the front left tire and crash pan you shouldnt have any trouble accessing it...good luck

No im not trapped under the tranny :) I havent done it yet prolly will soon tho once i get some time. I haven't been driving the Runner been driven his cousin the Geo Prizm

Rear Main Seal

Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum but you guys give some great info. I have just put 3600 dollars into a 94 SR5 4x4 and Im broke. Now that the motor runs great the mechanic tells me that the rear main seal is leaking. It leaves a small puddle under the truck about the size of a soccer ball. I just will not put another 600 into the truck right now so I figured I would do it myself. Not a mechanic although I'm pretty mechanically inclineso I think I could do the job if I had the instructions. Anyone out there that could give me a step by step on how to do this. Thanks for any info you can give.

I know you are going to have to drop the tranny and you can do it without dropping the oil pan but it is easier dropping it. And you need to take your time installing the new seal, Best bet would be to pick up a shop manual.

You say you put $3600 into the truck what was done to it for that kind of scratch:confused:

was it leaking on the drivers side? my 4runner leaks oil on the drivers side, is this probably from the "oil cooler"? how hard of a job is that to fix?
thanks!
