Rear Mount Turbo Questions

Hello, I have done a lot of research on the turbo options for our 3rd gens, and there is not much information. I have read Clownmeat and Yoterman87's build threads, and their set up was really appealing to me. I am well aware that they have a skill level that is way above mine, but their rear mount set up really interested me. I was wondering if anyone else has done this other than them(I couldn't find any on here). I was thinking about the TRD supercharger, but that is way out of my price range now. I don't want this thread to turn into a "everything wrong with a rear/remote mount turbo" argument, I am only looking for some knowledgeable advice. I have two questions as of right now, the first question is to anyone that knows more about turbos than I do, I don't plan on running more than 7 psi of boost because that is what the stock systems can handle, but what springs should I use in my waste gate? I was thinking 4 psi springs but I am not sure. I was also wondering if anyone else fabs up the turbo exhaust like Yoterman87 and Clownmeat did, they did a great job with the design, but never sold them publicly. I will put a picture below of the exhaust that I am talking about(All credit to the two guys and their shop for the work/picture below). Thank you for your time.

Your local muffler shop should be able to help you with the exhaust, and I'd imagine you'd just use a standard boost controller to set your psi. Just jump in and do it! Be sure to post pics! It honestly doesn't look terribly hard to do.

How would the boost controller work if it is a remote mount system though? Aren't they usually under the hood? Sorry, this would be my first ever turbo endevour and there doesn't seem to be much info out on the interwebs.

Pretty certain I remember seeing a post about them selling that pipe for like a $150 or so. Be worth a PM to them.
Yeah I shot them a PM and he said that he never got around to making them, I tried convincing them to do it because a lot of people(including me) would GLADLY shell out $150, or even more for that kind of work.

If you want to keep it under 7psi then get a wastegate spring around there. No point in going down to 4 unless you want to see 4 psi max. Whatever spring you set in the wastegate will be what you see at the engine.

So if I get a 10 psi waste gate it will not hurt the system?

The controller is spliced at the vacuum line connected between the wastegate and turbo or engine depending on wastegate and controller design. So you install the controller close to the wastegate, even if it is several feet behind the engine.

You need a wastegate rated at or below your desired normal boost level, controllers cannot lower boost levels only raise. Whatever is the wastegate spring rating will be your minimum boost.

Alright, that clears it up a bit. Thank you.
Is it worth leaving the catalytic converter in the system before the turbo? Or would it not really hurt emissions just taking it out?

Sorry if that was vague, by around there I mean around 7, 10 is too much. A lot of wastegates come with a springs around what you want. Turbosmart wastegates come with a 7 psi spring, Tial stuff comes with multiple springs the closest being 7.25 psi. I dont think you'll have a big issue with a 7.25 psi spring but if you want to be on the safer side they also come with a 5.8 psi spring.

Alright, thank you. This is why this forum is great, so I can actually ask questions to people that have 100x the knowledge that I have.

have you watched the special on rear mounted turbo on a tacoma on the SPIKE tv show called....... trucks, xtreme 4x4, muscle car, crap whats that show called. I think it was the sub section TRUCKS that did it year year years ago, they go over some cool things.

Look up STS turbo systems. They are the guys that started the rear mount turbo systems

Yes, unfortunately they went out of business after a change in ownership recently, but I am going to base my system off of theirs, except with cheaper, more poor 17 year old wallet friendly options.

I actually just watched this after you mentioned it, will be helpful as a reference, thank you! Here is the link to the video if anyone wants to watch it. Extended 'Coma Part 2: Adding a Turbo! | Trucks! | PowerBlockTV - Full Episodes

What kind of lines Are you going to run to feed oil to the the turbo? Where is the line going to connect to and get pressure from? What electric scavenge pump are you going to use to get the oil back to the sump? How will oil enter the sump? How much abuse will your factory torque converter and transmission hold up to? You got cash to replace a transmission? How much of what size pipe are you going to run back to the throttle body? What size tubine a/r?

Lots of stuff goes into a turbo system that you need to look at before you worry about besides boost pressure. You really need to spend a lot of time looking at what others have done and gather parts slowly and think about the turbo system as a whole and how it functions. If you're asking a bout putting a cat after the rear mount turbo you need to do some more research.

Not trying to be a dick, I bought a 3000gt vr-4 when I was 17 because I worked 30-40 hrs a week and boy did I learn the hard way you gotta pay to play.

I'd be happy to talk to walk you through things to help provide a direction and a goal and insight and help, just send me a pm.

It will get pressure from the block by the oil pressure sending unit, to a scavenge pump that I already found (on ebay), drain back into the oil cap. I am also planning on using all braided lines because they will be exposed under the rig(I figure they will be the strongest). I am only planning on running a small amount of boost, no more than TRD rated the 3.4l for with the supercharger, I am only going to run a cheap ebay turbo, nothing that the majority of the stock systems can't handle. I am also getting new spark plugs and am going to run premium gas. Also, I wouldn't put the cat after the turbo, it is more a question whether to leave it on before the turbo, sorry if there was confusion. Thank you for your advice.
EDIT: I edited my post before about the cat, I meant to say before the turbo, not after, sorry about that.

I have experience with cheap turbos. Blown seals cracking manifolds and propellers sticking into motor. Why not run cheap used quality holder or garret.

I would do that, except I live in the middle of car nowhere, people don't turbo around me. Craigslist around here is completely dead, I was lucky to find my 4Runner XD I am also not knowledgeable enough to tell if a used turbo was shot or not, given that I could find one in the first place. I think that with the rear mount set up, low boost pressure, and proper precautions I should be ok. Thank you for giving me a heads up though, I know they can blow, but some people also never have a problem with them, and run them for years.

Very true, I keep forgetting we ran them at 30+psi like they are designed for but never could hold up. In low boost application they could make it awhile.
