Rear Parking assist

Am I the only one that wished the 4R had rear parking assist with the rear camera? I wonder if there was a way to add it after market? I know the non Nav units have the camera in the rear view and parking assist. Why is this not available with the Nav unit?

Was this an option for the Limited that I didn't know about? When you build the unit with Nav, (NV) Voice-activated touch-screen DVD navigation system [11] with JBL® AM/FM/MP3 4-disc CD changer with 15 speakers including subwoofer, integrated XM Satellite Radio [7] and XM NavTraffic® [11], with 3-month trial subscriptions, USB port [8] with iPod® [9] connectivity, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth® [10] wireless technology, and integrated backup camera [12] (Deletes Mirror Integrated Backup Camera Monitor).

Does not mention anything about parking assist.

I think it comes down to size. With the generous Nav screen video size and edge to edge coverage I think they thought there was no reason for the sonar as you can see everything you need to, and at a decent size. Using that logic also probably trying to safe a few $$$ too.

My little display in the mirror does not show the edges of the bumper, and I could see why them might think the sonar would help it that situation. Since I keep a receiver in at all times I have the sonar off as all it does it beep though.
 
You have a rear view mirror, two side mirrors, and a flipping TV screen.

How much more assistance do you need to drive backwards?
 
The non nav limiteds are the ones that get the least. Sonar is not an option on a limited in any configuration I have seen. That sucks because the SR5s get sonar and the rear view mirror camera. Us limiteds just get the little camera. Sonar would be nice, but not necessary. I definitely think the big Nav screen would be plenty with no sonar.
 
How did our grandfathers park their land barges in the 50's or 60's without these fancy "driver's aid's".

My wife's S class Benz has more dumb a$$ gizmos to make us better "drivers" :lmao::driving:

With that logic, we may as well remove abs brakes, cruise, power steering and all of the other technological advances we've made the past few decades then too ;)

Ha. I mean those are useful, except maybe cruise control which I could live without.

I back into every parking space.

But I could see it being useful if I had children.
 
When I first got my SR5 I thought both the camera and the sonar were kinda silly. But I always back into my (tight) spot in my parking garage, and now find them both very useful.

I sure wish I'd had a camera like that when I towed a boat.

Same here - 2010 SR5

There was a seller on eBay selling a system that was similar to (if not the same as) the factory rear-view mirror with back-up camera. It was marketed specifically for the 2010 T4R.

As a former full time now part time racer and grease monkey for my little boys racing karts I have this view on ABS, it removes driver control ( in other words people need to learn how to drive, not aim and point their cars) those are 2 separate things. This is why the Germans can drive the Autobahn and pay a few thousand dollars to learn to drive and we pay the DMV about 25 bucks to be considered "drivers". They can drive over 200 mph on their freeways we get 70 if we are lucky. Power steering deadens the feel even a system as good as my 997 is not the same as direct steering. Plus power steering is only useful in slow crawling situations ( hit the gym instead your body will thank you).

Same as airbags, I had one go off on me (texting "driver" hit me) and other than the taste of of the powder which reduces your taste of food for a couple of days I got to spend or my insurance company spent over 9k to replace them, they are not installed in race cars for a reason.

Most of these gizmos contribute to the dumbing down of drivers. My neighbor just bought his wife a mini-van. I asked him why he bought his wife and children a vehicle that has the worst steering,handling, braking systems on the road. I told him if he really loved his family shouldn't they drive a vehicle that allows for the best car control? He looked at me with a dazed look on his face like the doves I hunted last week. But I told him at least it has a video display to watch movies :driving:

Anywho to each his own.
 
I have a major beef with Toyota for not having park assist. When you purchase a vehicle of any kind that is called "Limited" or "Limited Edition" or "Special Edition" it should have park assist as a standard feature. The big problem is if your previous car had park assist you can't live without it. You know the value that it brings to not scraping up your bumpers. However, if you've never had park assist you haven't had the experience so it's no big deal if you don't have it. My previous car had park assist, but did not have a back up camera. Based on my experience being on both sides I would much rather have park assist over a back camera unless the camera came with park assist as well.

On a side note you can go to your local high end audio shop and they can easily for a not such a low price install a park assist system that will resemble a factory system. You really have to be comitted as they will drill through your front and rear bumper covers. Sounds like a disaster, but those sensors they pop in will look like a factory system. From the outside nobody will know this is an aftermarket feature.

I am a former racer myself ( expert racer with WERA and CCS, have raced Daytona International Speedway and overseas.) I think that using the technology available is what its all about. How do you think cars and bikes are so fast these days? Everything has moved forward. The removal of throttle cables, better tires, electronic speed shifters, lighter weight materials....all make a difference if they even shave a tenth of a second off. If the competition uses it, you have no choice.

Back to the ABS point: To me, it does not matter if we dumb down driving or take away feel on the public roads. They are not race tracks and should never be compared as such. ABS, traction control etc, all great inventions no doubt for public roads, where unexpected things happen. Its the "oh $hit" moments, where you will be glad ABS was there. On public roads, we can't control what's on it, the conditions etc. Sure, the world would be a much safer place if license applicants were all forced to do a track day prior to getting a license......but I don't ever see that happening :) The problem these days are excessive speeding and inattentive driving if you ask me. Go the speed limit and maintain a good distance, and you greatly reduce the chance of accidents happening.

For the race track, you will see two sides of the argument. One argument is that it takes away the natural way through a corner. The other argument is that it makes for safer racing. Those who usually don't like new technology, usually aren't the ones risking their lives going around the track.

Some of the fastest cars to ever lap the "ring" in Germany, had some of the latest cutting edge technology. Look at the GTR. 4 wheel steering, pretty much electronic everything too.... :)
