Rear Shocks

After owning 4 FJ40s and 2 Tacomas (Toyota just bought back my '97...) I just found a real beauty in an '02 4Runner with 73k miles. I'd like to replace the rear shocks and would like some feed back on what folks recomend. It will be mostly used on road with some off road trips.

Welcome to the forum.

Lots of people use Bilsteins. I have always found KYB's to be very good, fairly priced shocks that provide good control and a great ride.

Gas-a-just... Plenty of control for the sane person. I am a '10-15 (mph) over' type driver. I will cruise a dirt road at a good clip. I'll tow heavy things. I do not think I have Ivan Stewart or Duke family DNA. (I used to but I am too old now:D )

I hate an over dampened ride with harshness at each pavement ripple. I don't like floaty, out of control 1975 Caddy type ride either.

I have used the Gas-a-just on a few vehicles and just love them. I have tried a variety of Ranchos, Monroes, Bilstiens etc. and still like the modestly priced & durable KYB's. Are they the best shock in the whole world? I don't think so. They are very good with a very high bang-for-the-buck quotient.

I work for Sears and we sell Ranchos so I'd get a discount. What's your take on the RSX series? I haven't had any customers that I recall that have had them so I only know what I've read. I'll spend a few dollars more for a better ride - don't get me wrong...
 
I don't know about those shocks specifically. I have heard positive feedback on the Monroe Reflex which is very similar (if not identical). If you're getting a solid discount I'd say try them.

Often times it'll take you to the message board that pertains to whatever. Then it's up to you to remember just because you read it on the internet doesn't make it true:bash:

My schedule is up in the air based on the fact my roof may be up in the air. Damn hurricanes!

I am hoping to be there to catch a ski session on the lake if it's not too cold for my wimpy Florida blood:D

I was talking about going behind my Dad's 17 Whaler. If you live with lake view I am sure you've seen him. He's the nut job that put a 90 tiller drive on an old, beat up 17 Whaler.

I don't know what to say... It has been quite a while since I've tried Ranchos. As late as '98-'00 they were stiff and I had no love for what I considered to be excessive compression dampening for everyday use. A lot can change within ten years though:D

I had an Edlebrock IAS's that developed a leak. I had to send it back. I am very glad I kept one old F&R rear shock. IIRC they wanted the defective shock before they'd send a new one.

Excellent. Would you use the term harsh to describe them over the bumps? Or did they just get the wallow out and give it a more controlled ride?

BTW- I have made it as far as Atlanta, heading up there to,orrow AM:D
 
Definately stiffer but not harsh. I'm already used to it and glad I did it...

I'll be around til early afternoon on Friday - we're headed to the Cape for some camping/biking...
