Rear Speakers/brackets!

So i'm currently replacing the aging stereo system in my 85 4runner and while viewing the bed, found out that there are no speakers nor any brackets to place any speakers in the rear of the truck. Now since there are holes placed on both sides of the panels in the rear, I had assumed that there would be speakers and brackets. :cry2: Does anyone know where i can find some brackets for rear speakers in a 1st gen 4runner? I was told that originally, they held 6 and 1/2 inch speakers.

I made a set to hold 6x9 speakers out of 1/2 plywood.

Do a search you will find some pics of different setups people have done.
You can search my 1988 restoration thread to see my setup. I am real happy with the sound quality.

They did originally have 6 1/2 inch speakers if the were installed. when i got my 86 someone had cut the panels and mounted some. not a great idea to do the panels break. i don't know where to get any brackets beside a junk yard if you get very lucky. from what i have been able to find out very few 4runner ever had speakers in the back.

I emailed a couple of junkyards around my area, and hopefully i'll be in luck about finding some brackets. If not, i guess i'll have to use creativity in installing them.
It seems silly though that they add holes in the panels making it seem like there are speakers.

I plan on making plywood panels in place of the plastic ones and cut out places for 6x9 speakers. You could add a piece of plywood to the back of the plastic panel to make it rigid and cut a hole to mount your 6.5 speaker. You would probably also want a grill or your speakers so they don't get damaged.

I used some old 6x9's I bought a few years ago with speaker boxes, drilled a small hole in the bottom and bolted them where the cargo hooks in back go (there's a small hole, at least on mine, that worked perfectly). Used a small bolt with a nut that fit perfectly in there. I don't know if I'll ever get em back out, but I got em in, and they don't budge.

Unless you are going to use 4" speakers, you cannot use the factory brackets. The factory speaker is an amplified, 5" speaker that has the tweeter integrated into the bracket assembly. You need to cut that out to get it work. Your best bet is as everyone has stated, pretty much make one yourself to go behind the panel or find one that will contour to the panel. i know this is old but that black half box you have where the side door goes over. did you add the black box or was it stock? i know my runner is all factory as my dad was the 1st owner but i dont have a box, its just open. if you did add the box, whered you get it
