Rear Speakers

So my friends are all complaining when they sit in the rear that the music sounds like shit even though its near perfect in the front seats. So now that I have money, and that 4" speakers are dirt cheap, I thought I'd upgrade.

Anyone have any suggestions? Also any writeups on how to install it?

Read that all 3.5"/4" speakers are made by 2 companies world wide. All the same expect for a couple of high dollar alternatives, so just get whatever the best deal leads.

If you havn't already swapped them out, you can use the existing plastic plate to fit some 5.25s (i.e. Boston S55) in there nicely. All you have to do is cut the plate slighty larger and they drop right in. Or you can save the money and make your friends walk since all they want to do is bash your ride!

put some focal 130ca1, the focal access and use a spacer and itll sound good in the back door.

im glad I found this post. I've still got the stock speakers and was going to upgrade the 4 inchers so I'm thrilled to hear its possible to get a set of 5.25's in there.

But, could you post a little detail on how difficult it was? How fragile is the plastic? difficult to cut? If I crack or break it am I screwed?

The plastic plate is pretty thick (1/4 in. mayber) and is not the brittle type at all so you shouldn't be able to break it with ease. After removing the plate from the door I laid a template on top of it for my speaker cut out and traced around. Then I used a bandsaw (not required of course, a jigsaw or dremel would work easily, even a coping saw would handle it) and cut out the circle. I had to sand down plastic ribbing on the plate that was preventing the speaker from sitting flush. Then I drilled the screw holes for the speaker. Place the plate back in the door and ensure the holes for mounting the speaker are not obstructed. In my case I ended up drilling into parts of the door as well to mount the speaker but you may not require this. Also you will notice the speaker plate has an overhang on the back (i'm thinking to protect the speaker if water drips down inside the door) I cut this off and reshaped it by hand to fit the new cut out size and epoxied it in place.
