rear speakers

I have a question about the rear speakers in my 4R. first of all i have a 96 Limited, that came with the in-dash cd player. I went to order the rear speakers, and crutchfield tells me that you need a special adapter to get 5 1/4's in there. but by using the search feature on here, i noticed a lot of people put 4" speakers in the rear. so whats up with that? can you adapt the hole somehow to fit the 5 1/4's or is it better to fit the 4" in there? i havent taken the door panel apart yet to look, but i was hoping someone else already has and knows what it looks like. thanks

I bought these speaker adapters online which allow you to fit 5 1/4 speakers in the rear doors.

The factory rear speakers are 4 ", did you have to cut anything to use 5 1/4 in the rear? I am going to go with infinity speakers for both the ront and rear in my 4R.

did you order from hookedontronics? did you order 4 or 5 1/4 for the rear, and what speakers did you get. I have heard that you need to cut the rear panel to make the 5 1/4 fit, so I am going to make it easy and stick with the 4". I will have Curcuit City install for $30. pair. speakers are easy to install, but i know it is done right if i pay them to do it.

I bought those adapters to try and fit some Infinity Reference 5 1/4 speakers in the rear doors, but they were still too deep and wouldn't fit.

So I bought some CDT CL-5x speakers, which are slim and fit in the doors with no problem. It all depends on the depth of the speakers you want to fit in the door.

I have a 99. So you might have the same problem in your 96.
