Rear Speakers

Does anyone know what size the rear speakers in a 96 runner are? Crutchfield doesn't seem to have that info. Thanks!

yes, with an adapter and a little cutting you can fit those. the stock size is 4".. pretty weak.

be careful you dont get something that goes too deep in the door.. it may not fit or may interrupt the window operation.

Yes! And they are weak!

The rear speakers are actually 4". I somehow squeezed in 5 1/4. You have to modify the plastic housing a little in the door panel. There is a ridge on the rear mounting surface which prevents just any 5 1/4 speaker from fitting flush against the surface. The factory speakers are not your run-of-the-mill auto speakers and were obviously designed with the abnormal surface in mind.
However, most aftermarket speakers don't take such things into account. The front wasn't so bad, but I still had to use silicone sealant to be sure that there was no air between the speakers and the plastic mounting surface. I think Toyota wanted to make it difficult to replace the factory speakers. Of course, you could just make your own custom mounting surface.

The 5 1/4's I installed were separates and here is where I mounted the tweeter and painted to match:

Now, if you want to go for a BIGGER speaker, I did help a friend install JBL 6.5's in the rear.

To do this we took the OEM 4" plastic mount and used it as a template against a sheet of 3/8" MDF. We also glued-n-screwed a short piece of PVC conduit on the front and back of the MDF as a mounting standoff similar to the OEM bracket. With a little foam weatherstripping and black paint it looks factory. There was very minor plastic trimming necessary to the backside of the doorpanel. No a big deal. We then flush mounted tweeters in the C-pillar plastic trim above and behind the passenger's heads aiming and crossing forward. The external crossovers were easily mounted behind the plastic trim.
The installation took a while, but it looks very nice and the imaging is very good. I would recommend to anyone doing a speaker upgrade to look at separates w/ the tweeter located up higher.

i replaced my rears with new 4" speakers just to simplify life... theyre actually working quite well and are not noticeably weaker.

i just need a powered sub (i have a 4 channel amp :( ) to take away some of the bass rattle up front....

I'm doing the sound upgrade piece-by-piece. Right now I've got a Mccintosh mcc301m powering a 12" DVC Eclipse aluminum sub with the amp sitting in it's own custom-made box. I'll post picts some time, it looks pretty sweet and sounds awesome.

Anyone have suggestions on 4-channel amps/speakers. The Mac's have great amps, but they're pretty large in size. I was thinking about the JL's.

Only pics I have are of mine above. I didn't make any holes, and used 3m double stock to stick them on the door panel. You can't tell and they look great.

On amp advice, all I use is Alpine and Precision Power. I've had the same amps for a long time, over 4 years and never a problem. Clean/clear/reliable.

i use an Alpine MRV-F340 55W x 4 amplifier

Difference in sound

Lee, I checked out your site and it looks like we have the same head unit. Alpine CDA-7894. Did putting that 4-chan. alpine amp make enough of a difference, in your opinion?

yes, it made a huge difference for me.. mainly because it evened out the sound in the front and back. my front speakers are MUCH more powerful than my rears, and it used to show a lot. all i need is a sub, as i said, and the system will be perfect. right now im just experiencing some rattle up front on heavy bass.

my solution so far has been to take old rags and stuff them in the door cubbies. that worked great, as long as theyre in there tight.

but thats ghetto... so i need to complete my system soon.

our headunit is awesome by the way... you can customize the sound so much more cleanly than most others ive seen.

right now im focused on getting a small lift (PP springs = 1.5" or so), then comes the sub, then comes new tires. :arrow:

Price of one gets you two. Add an amp and a power kit for the amp and it's over $200 = free shipping. I was doing a LOT of research online this week since I just bought a 97 4Runner this month and it has NO bottom end to the sound system.

crutchfield has the highest prices ever, fyi. those deals rarely work in your favor, but if it does in this case, go for it. what i would do is, plug in your truck, find all the model numbers of the items you want.

then go to froogle.com and plug those model numbers in and see what prices you get.

another great site for audio equipment with amazing prices is www.hookedontronics.com

i got my amp there for about $100 less than crutchfield sold it for.
 
Other places to buy

I'd also recommend ebay for buying car stereo gear. I've had good experiences with purchases there. I'd just be careful who you're buying from. i.e. don't buy from people w/ zero feedback. You can save serious money there.
 
it isnt installed yet.. goes in in a week or so.

it will be mounted behind my rear seats, next to my amp...

ive really heard very positive things about it, so i can only assume its awesome! :p

ill def. keep you guys up to date.
 
update: it's being installed as we speak!!

Well, dude. . .how's it look!?! How is the sound? Could it fit under a front seat? I've got lots of questions!!
