Rear Spring and Shock Combo - Your Input Please

I am currently running an OME 2895 spring right now on my 4th Gen. Its a 2 inch lift and has a spring rate of about 260 LB.

Paired with a bilstein 5100, I came to learn about the spring rate / shock mismatch, which became pretty obvious after some serious use.

My question to you... for those who are running the OME 2895, what shock have you paired it with, and how do you like it?

Here are some additional research notes I came up with...

The ICON 2" (Part 52700) springs have a 200 lb rate which are supposed to pair up very well with the 2.0 and 2.0 RR shocks.

If I went with an ICON 2.0, I would probably have to get them re-valved to match perfectly. Aside from the OME shock, what else would you recommend?

Does anyone know the target matched spring rate the ICON 2.5" RR shocks were designed for? I assume its their 3" Overland springs but I dont see any spring rate data on their website.

This is like the 3rd thread I've seen about 5100s in the rear. They suck for anything more than a 1.5" daystar spacer. 99% sure that the shock can't handle 2" especially if you plan on off roading and it barely works for on road.

That being said, the icon's work for the rear. I'm running the extended length ones but I also changed my springs to the metal tech medium long travel springs.

Ya man... i know. I should have probably kept this all condensed to one thread but I figured id separate it as it was a new topic about matching something to the rear coil...

Anyway... looks like I made a decision on the rear shocks.

I am going with the ICON 2.5 RR though that group buy you mentioned... I might go with the CDCV for the added convenience of tuning but I dont think its needed.

If I still feel over-sprung after that, ill end up changing the spring. At least ill know the shock is going to be good-to-go for the life of the rig. For what I do, im pretty sure I would have changed it again if I went with a 2.0 ICON... Hopefully this is my buy-once-cry-once purchase.

I was just so confused with the performance of the 5100 as literally everyone recommended that shock when I was buying the kit for the first time. Its not like I picked this combination out of the blue, its actually what was recommended by a popular vendor. Perhaps they didn't take care of my needs the way I was hoping they would. Their recommendation for 6112 in the front were actually spot on.

I sold my bilstein setup. And now paired my 895e which 260 lbs springs which icon 2.0. I recommend it handles nicely now.

Sorry, that was more a rant about seeing another post on how badly 5100s suck. I still don't understand why so many people still recommend them with a 2" spring in the rear. I've seen more complaints recently about 5100s in the rear then I did a year ago when I was originally researching lifts myself. I had them on for about 3 months before I got rid of them for the same complaint about they blow off road.

Very nice!

Just curious but what type of off-road driving do you do?

We have a lot of sand and dunes out here in San Diego... I spend a lot of time at Superstition Mountain and anza borrego

Ive found that

the 5100s work best with springs with rates in the 190- to 200 range providing less than 1.5" lift. Last time i ran OME rear coils i found they worked best matched with OME shocks.

Im sure that is a great pairing... but something about those Nitrocharger shocks dont give me the warm and fuzzy...

I have a feeling I would have ended up growing out of those too...

What irritates me most about this ordeal is that its a forum sponsored vendor which confirmed that rear pairing. I wish they could have given me some insight into the 2" lift height and spring rate when talking about the 5100.

Theirs none of that here some mild stuff since i dont have a group to go with. I guess NYC roads are offroad. Lol. And going fast on these awful roads rides well controlled And i wouldnt do fast either if their was. I basically had the desth wobble in the rear and i though something was wrong i triple checked everything. And after reading alot in the forums came to conclusion having heavy tires with shocks that cant handle extra weight plus a really strong spring. Was giving me the issue. I even bought 5th gen oem spring thinking it would help. Nope i was wrong. 5100 plain suck. I dont recommend. I should of spent my money once. On icon. Wrong information was feed

I agree..

But i guess a sale is a sale...even its at the expense of the customer..

No joke. Some Manhattan streets are worse than unpaved dirt roads. But my current setup takes them really well (funny how I feel every little bump on a flat paved road but glide over lunar landscape like Manhattan with no sweat. Suspension is really arcane stuff)

I have Radflo 220lb springs in the rear. They suck with the 5100s as well. My front 2.5" radflo coils ride awesome. I think im going to go with some 2.5" non remote shocks in the back. I don't do high speed off road, so the extra cost of the reservoirs is a wast of money for me.

Honestly... after the countless hours of reading I did on 2.0 vs 2.5 and regular vs remote rez... Nothing helped me understand what I need better than just getting the damn parts and trying them myself...

Unfortunately there is a price associated with doing that, but the first hand experience is valuable to me too.

I am no expert, but I am the son of an engineer... I am of the opinion, that a 2" shock with never ride like a 2.5". I observed (front suspension) certain "feel" and ride characteristics I felt with a 2.5 that I never felt with a 2.0.

If you can afford a better shock... get it. "I rather have a 2.0 said no one ever..."

I am going to try a 2.5 in the rear, I hate the price, but i'm sure that will "fade" away after trying them out.

I have not looked into any of the Radflo offerings... what can one expect to pay for a rear 2.5" non rez pair if they shop around? How are they valved, digressive or more in line with the Fox/King offerings?

Personally I went 2.0 with remote reservoirs because I didn't want to pay the price of the 2.5s. I figured volume wise it's close to the same but the oil is separated by the reservoir. Same reason I went 2.5 in the front no res. I'm not doing lt type off road so the volume should be good.

Hey, I totally get it... I dont have unlimited funds... I cant buy top of the line for everything I want. I have made plenty of compromises in my life.

I dont want to pay the price of the 2.5s either, but a part of me is so curious about how they ride, that I am going it do it just to see what all the fuss is about.

I guess the point I was trying to make was not from a cost standpoint, but from a design / engineering standpoint. The larger body, piston, amount of oil volume moving during dampening operation... it has to feel different, no?

Even if not being pushed to the limits, I think the 2.5 may have a different ride vs a 2.0, regardless of how its being used... Everyone likes to talk about shock fade but 2.0 vs 2.5 non rez, but do they feel different even playing trophy truck over speed bumps or the occasional hard g-outs?

I guess at this stage, I am in the mood to experiment. I dont have all the answers, I am merely speculating based on what I have seen with my front suspension changes. I have never ran a remote rez on my front, but I haven't found a single 2.0 that FEELS as plush or damped at a 2.5.

One thing that the ICON 2.5 offers than the 2.0 does not is the internal bump zone... I think that is a pretty cool feature, but ill report back regarding its effectiveness. I do all my own suspension work anyways so the only penalty I had to pay for swapping parts in and out is my own time.
