Rear springs

Lets talk rear leaf springs. I think I'm going in a different direction and pulling my "lift" off. I've currently got a coil helper in the rear and balljoint spacers in the front, and after a couple trails I've decided I'm higher than I want to be and don't have enough flex. That's a bad combo, so it's back to stock height for me.

Trouble is, my rears are shot, which was the reason for the zukmod in the first place. What are my options? I'm looking first for load capacity at stock height, with good flex a close second. Those may be conflicting goals?

1) replacement OE springs/rearch what I've got. They'll just sag again.

2) replacement OE springs with overload/helper leaf. Rough ride, less flex. I kinda don't want to do this.

3) Modify the Zukmod with a shorter and weaker coil. I don't want to do this either. With respect to ZUK, it's a compromise and a hack job to run the no-weld like I've got, and even if I had the fab skills to do it right it's still a flex limiter.

4) OME springs? I've heard conflicting reports, do the medium duty OME springs add lift or not? A set of OME springs that would leave me at stock height would be perfect.

5) Chevies? Never mind that the thought of a Chevy product on my Yota makes me throw up a little in my mouth, if these will work for me I'll hold my nose and run 'em. But I've heard conflicting things here too, folks say they just flex better and others use them behind a straight axle swap to balance the 4 inch lift in front. What's the story on these, do they add lift?

6) Custom spring pack - HASSLE. I'll revisit this if I have to, but right now it's off the table. Don't wanna mess with that.

7) Airbags on my existing springs? Similiar to the zukmod, it's a compromise and a bandaid.

8) Something else I haven't thought of?

To sum up - I'm looking for a clean rear suspension solution that will leave me stock height, flexes well, and won't sag when I put a gallon of water in the bed. Educate me?

You may as well come to the terms that any stock spring will not add lift nor will it give you any decent articulation for good off road behavior. People who run chevy springs or trail-gear springs like what I have need to cut the stock spring hangars and shackle mounts off and weld new ones on. The longer springs are what gives the good flex.

I would suggest staying away from the zuk mod all together. It's a hack mod and implies redneck engineering at best.

If you want stock height, get new stock springs. They will last a long time before they start to sag again and won't bee too hard on the bank. If you want lift and flex then get longer springs (chevies or TG), you'll have to do some fab work and it will be more expensive.

Unfortunately, you cannot have a good articulating suspension in stock form. It's a trade off.

Take a look at these. Alcan Spring - Manufactures Fine Custom Leaf Springs
If I didn't already have lift springs I would probably go for these. If I decide to change my lift springs, I will probably go for these.
Tailor made for you truck. They know the 4runner so, maybe not so tailor made...but they know the right formula for what you want based on your needs.

Or these? With stockish springs and these to give flex. Teraflex Revolver Shackles | TeraFlex Suspensions But there is debate as to the dangers if they unload unexpectedly. And when they unload and you droop into a hole, it's said that there is so little weight that you don't increase traction.
Maybe I haven't searched hard enough on this myself, but most accounts seem to be arm chair theories, and not accounts of people who have had horrible roll over with them. So, not sure what to think.

But the Alcans would be good at a stockish height with the orbit eye to give you even nicer flex.

OME springs will add a couple inches (unless they have some stock height stuff they don't advertise with the lifts). Their spring rates are designed for better ride, so they should flex fairly well, and they pre-stress all their springs to eliminate sagging down the road. A couple inches shouldn't compromise your handling too drastically--the extra width of larger tires should offset most of that.

Chevvies will lift you higher than you want unless you french the hanger and shackle mount. (Which would be sweet btw)

I like #6, as much as you dont. Get another set of stock rear leafs (or even 3rd gen pickup ones, 52" long main leaf) and mix and match for the height flex you want.

How much lift are you looking for?

None. I want lower COG, less wind resistance, less hassle with lifting the IFS in front.

I may resort to a custom spring pack, blech. I thought the 3rd gen pickup used the same springs as our 1st gen 4Runners?

They are 52" (possibly 51? not quite sure) whereas 1st gen 4runner springs are 48"

Id get another set of springs, thrown 2 longer leafs on each side and be done with it.

Im running sort of the same setup in my 87. Its very flexy, but needs a tad longer shackle.

Edit: And list your "zuk" coils forsale on Yotatech, those guys will eat um up. Haha.

Get the OME, 2-2.5" of lift over the original stock height, and great ride and handling.
From your post I don't think you'd be happy with a Chevy swap, plus you have to be able to cut/grind/weld/fab.

Moog works for me. It's thicker than stock so i won't sag as quickly and it doesn't sag as much when i have a load in the back. $30 pickup @ advance auto...

Replace the shocks (if not newer) and all the bushings (helps alot)

fourwd1, if I was going to stay lifted I'd go with the OMEs in a heartbeat, and if I ever relift then I'll absolutely go with that option.

Moog makes a leaf spring setup? Do you have a part number? I don't see it at Advance or Moog's websites.

Thanks everybody else for the suggestions too, ya'll rock as always.

Just to update this old thread, I've been resigned to springing (get it?) for an OME pack and removing a leaf, when I found another option: Ironman springs.

Less lift and not as pricey as the OME, and the reviews on Yotatech and Pirate are all positive. So there's another source of quality springs that aren't a 4inch or higher lift.

Ive got a set of OME springs I'll be putting on this week. Everything else is stock. I'll take some measurements and pics when I'm done. BTW I bought my OME springs through amazon. I think I paid $110 a side and it was free shipping. Everone else wanted $40-$50 for shipping.

+1 on the Alcan springs - I have stock hight custom springs and Bilstien shocks. I called the guys at Alcan and said I wanted something for daily road driving be heavy duty enough to load up with ppl and gear and hit the trails. My set up is custom tailored to more for roads and over landing but I'm sure they could make you something to fit your needs. Mine took about three weeks to get and cost about $500 but the install was easy and now with about 40k miles on them I have not a single complaint.
