Hi all,
i needed some storage for the back of my 4R. i didn't want one of those drawers that take up the entire backend because i could no longer sleep in there in a pinch, and i wanted a bit more open space back there.
so i designed something that would go over the left wheel well. here is the finished picture:
i decided to post in here, in case anyone else wants to build one of these.
these are the materials you'll need for it:
(1) 1/2" thick 4x8 sheet of hardwood plywood (like birch, or other)
(2) hinges
(1) 4' x 6' piece of carpet
(lots) drywall screws (1" is fine)
(1) small bucket of indoor/outdoor carpet glue
(1) carpet glue trowel
total cost on this is ~$80 (USD), and 6 hours build time (could be done faster, but i took my time, and the carpet is a pain in the ass.

this is what i started with, i measured out a bunch of stuff in the back and then sketched up a design (click for a larger version to print):
cut out all the pieces of the box (i'm sure you can figure them out from the illustration).
then start to build the well and the bottom. 1" drywall screws work really well to fasten this thing together:
Then put the wheel-side back and the seat-side wall on:
then the front and rear wall, and put some hinges on it:
Finally, carpet it, this is a pain. that sh%t is so sticky.
let it dry, install and enjoy:

further modifications that would improve this:
- lower the space for the well by 1" - right now, there is plenty of space for the wheel, you could lower the wheel well clearance by at least 1"
- carve out a space for the tonneau cover - as designed, this blocks the hang point for the tonneau cover. if you were to carve out a spot towards the seat on this thing, you could use the tonneau cover with it, but this would significantly complicate the design.
- latch or magnet - right now, mine doesn't include a latch, as it works just fine, but you could easily add a latch, or even better, a magnet strip + metal strip to it.
