Rear suspension tink tink

Ok so im stumped on what is causing the noise on my drivers rear. Its a tink tink tink noise, not a clunk or thump. It doesnt tink at normal or high speed, only low speeds of 20 or slower. In neighborhoods mostly where the cracks in the road are. I can barely feel the bumps in the truck but the dammed tink surely can feel them. Driving down the road all I hear is tink tink tink. I have 895s with the DS 1.5 spacer and extended sway bar links, that i extended myself, cut and weld. I replaced sway bar bushings 2 years ago. Lets hear some suggestions, pan hard bar bushings? Lower control arm bushings? The other arm under there bushings? What do you guys think it could be? Could it be my hack job on the end links? Id like to solve this before the Central Va Trail Run next saturday.

Was thinking possible made extended links if your design was too long hitting the gas tank mount, but, you say you can feel the tink. This makes me believe this isn't the spot, but, possible.

Sounds like you need to in increments, start lifting the axle up and look for contact points of what is hitting.

It might not even be in the areas you are looking at also, as every time I do changes, seems like I get usual sounds.

Ill check that gas tank end link contact. I cant feel the tink i can only hear it. It occurs over the smallest imperfections in the roads. Its possible that i made the end links to long.

This forum is usually really helpful, but not so much with this thread??

I have another way to duplicate the sound, hopefully this will spark some more ideas of what could be causing the noise.

I can stand on the ball mount for the trailer hitch and bounce the rear end of the truck and duplicate the noise. I suspected the noise was my jerry rigged extended end links so I made some other ones exactly 6.5in long and I used heim joints, still makes the noise, sooooooo....... Ive also had people stand near the drivers rear wheel well and they cannot figure out the noise, neither can I. Any help guys????????

4gin007 I had the weld on my exhaust bracket break free allowing the exhaust to bounce hitting the frame on dips and cracks doing exactly what your saying and it drove me nuts.

Also had a couple rocks stuck in dust shield they would move when going slow over dips and cracks doing the same sound but moving fast they would stick against the shield cause high speeds.

Also look in your calipers, and check if your rim center cap is lose theyt will make that sound as well.

Good luck brotha
hope this will help

yes, id guess its the links.
heim joints are the wrong product for that use.

have someone bounce on the ball mount while you crawl under and check it. watch the end links, if you see any movement, that's your sound.
grab it and put pressure, see if the sound changes, or stops.

I made links just like these. Ive seen a few guys here and there running them without issue. Whats the reason not to use them? I can kinda picture the ones Im currently using not having the range of motion like the stock type would.

Yeah man i saw both of these and read great things about both types and then I decided to make the ones with the heim joints, exactly like yours. Im going to remove the links and see if I can recreate the noise with out them. See what happens and go from there I guess. Just an fyi the noise was apparent with both sets of extended links I had. I made the heim ones thinking it would solve the problem the other ones caused, which it didn't solve anything. Maybe its something else all together. I like to think its the rear brakes, tension spring or something.

Confusing question coming up:
Can the height of the truck compared to the length of the sway bar links cause the sway bar to bind and make contact with the truck along part of the bar that runs parallel with the axle? Somehow? Just brain storming. Like Im thinking the ends that connect to the sway links are angled to high, like there pointed towards the sky instead of being parallel with the road.

Yes... I've had mine done that before its smacks the top of that bar if the sway bar isn't lined up properly or too much endlink extension compared to your lift will allow it to bind and smack the top of the LCA bar. Look with a flashlight on top of the bar on boith side look for tap marks/scratches..

i would check if the brake pads are clanking or ebrake brake shoes. It could also be upper strut bushing. I also hate tracking done odd sounds.

Have you checked your spare tire under there? Had annoying noises on my old Durango and found the spare to not be tight up against the underbody. Easy fix.

perhaps if they are a high quality heim. but it has been my experience that most aren't. they tend to wear quickly, and get "sloppy" and since they don't have a rubber bushing, once there is ANY play in the heim, you will hear it on every bump. being that its a solid connection, and not rubberized.

but, like I said, crawl under first and check everything. it should be too hard to find the sound, if you can recreated it at will.

I had a tink tink sound that I thought was from my rear driver brake. It turned out to be the metal clip that holds the bottle jack in place in the rear compartment. Check that, and check the bottle jack itself and ensure it is snug.

No sir. I tried tightening every thing under the truck. Spare tire, shock bolts, sway bar end links, sway bar bushings, brake caliber bolts, all of them. The only ones that tightened down were the end link nuts, everything else was tight. I did all that last week, still heard the sound, today I removed the sway bar and the links completely. Drove it home heard the tink tink again and said WTF. Got home bounced on the trailer hitch and sure enough, the sound is still there, same as always. Im going to get one of the bigger guys at work to bounce the rear end of the truck tomorrow while I listen for the sound. Im also going to remove the spare tire and see if that is the bastard causing the insanity.

Could it be a bad shock? Bilstien 5100. 895 rear coils. daystar 1.5" spacer on the driver side, daystar 1" on the passenger side.

Also I think it could be the rear brakes, not sure what to check in that area. The brake pads are 88% gone. I plan on doing a brake over haul soon.

Maybe something exhaust related. I had a car once that had a heat shield that rattled only at certain rpm. But it could be something in the exhaust that is flexing enough cause a noise or contacting something else.

Also maybe somehow related to the parking brake? I believe it's just cable driven so any slack could potentially make a noise.

Let me know if you want a second set of eyes and ears on it.

Well that sucks but atleast your narrowing it down, The shock thing was gonna be my next idea for you as well not only check the bottom and top bolts but see if the bushings are shot allowing play on the mount.

Remember I originally also said check your brakes if their that worn what happens even if there not squealing yet the brake pads slap around in the caliper if not seated or rocks ib the dust shields, and the other was check exhaust mounts.
Heres mine currently as I was tracing for my tink tink and found this

image.jpg

Weld broke allowing mt exhaust to slap when going over dips and what not so I bungeed it til I get it welded up tomorrow.

The bushing in this bar is the aHole causing all the issues, its basically gone and the dog bone is flopping around. (the bar with the white label on it)
