Rear suspension torque specs

[HB 4X4]

Swapping out my OME with Icons in the rear today. Can anyone confirm the correct torque that the bolts on the shocks need to be? (The bottom one and top one). I know the top one needs to be tightened under weight of the truck, but I just can't remember the torque amounts. Thanks.

Not that it is a big difference, but I am looking at the 2007 manual and seeing these numbers...

top=18 lb/ft
bot=72 lb/ft

18 Seems way too low. What could happen to it if it is too tight? Anything bad? Also, how are you supposed to get a torque wrench to fit in there? It' blocked by the fender lining.

A crow's foot. Though using a crow's foot, your torque wrench setting will be slightly off from it's actual torque value, because the lever is not the same length.

How do they attach to the torque wrench?


Anyone know if any problems can arise by over tightening these bolts?

You just dont want to over tighten to the point of compressing the bushings too much.

The box like opening slips over the square drive of a torque wrench. The torque wrench now is used like an open end combination wrench. It works... I used it to torque my hitch mounting bolts above the exhaust. I don't remember adjusting for the different length of the torque wrench on the actual torque specs, oh wells.

Shocks?

I'm new to this forum and since you guys are talking about shocks, I thought I would ask for some advice deciding on what brand of shocks I should get for my 99 4Runner SR5 4WD.

It has about 90K miles on it and the shocks that are on it now are original. I've heard that the Bilsteins are a good choice.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I don't have permission to start a new one.

I was installing rear shocks a few weeks ago, and I was able to torque one of the bottom bolts to 72 ft/lb, but the other bolt snapped. I bought some new bolts from the dealership (part #91619-G1222) and when I attempted to torque the new bolt in again at 72 ft/lb, it also snapped.

I've put another new bolt in, but only torqued it to a little above 50 ft/lb to avoid breaking another bolt.

Would anyone know what I might be doing wrong here?

UPDATE: Found this with a little more Googling: Bilstein 5100 rear shock came off

Seems like firemanj92 only used 47 ft/lbs for torquing the new bolts.

72 ft*lbs for the rear lower shock bolt is correct. It should take WAY more torque than 72 to shear that bolt. I suspect your torque wrench is all fouled up.

Go slow next time and feel the bolt after every turn. If it starts to get hot you're overtorquing it.
