Rear Suspension Woes

So i'm driving along :lookout: and I start to hear this rattling/knocking sound that I thought was coming from the front. I start thinking oh sh!t im going to have a LBJ failure! So I pull over and start checking everything i can and nothing is loose at all. I just decided to shake the whole damn truck and notice my passenger side mirror is loose. I felt dumb......so i tighten it up and give it another shake and now hear something is the rear making noise.

I look under there to see this.........

Has this happened to anyone?

My guess....you probably didn't tighten it properly......sometimes we forget to do stuff like that.....

I once drove a car with the Lugnuts not properly tightened after re-installing my wheels. Thinking I had a flat, I pulled over, go look at my wheels, and just happen to touch a lugnut...and it falls off the car!!! The wheels was barely on, and it would have been a really bad situation!

Goes to show, when your 18 years old, and your dad tells you, "Did you double check your lugs?" DO IT! Don't just say YA YA, I already checked them......lol!

Glad to hear it wasn't something really bad man, it would be a shame to see you or that sweet truck damaged!!!

a good mechanic always has his work checked by someone else. thats what my dad told me growing up. and it seems to be true.

So what do I do now? Order new shock assembly? See if toyota has the washer?

Let me know asap please. Thanks guys

You can order those parts all piecemeal. Here are the PN's

Bushing/cushion: 90385‑19007 (not sure if this is all 4 bushings, a pair, or just 1, I think just 1)
Outside Washer: 90948‑03020
Bolt: 91619‑G1222

Looks like it should be less than $10 total.

Oh, and add a couple bucks for some loctite

If your in a rush, go to sears and say ypu bought rancho shocks and they didnt come with some of the hardware, could you get the bolt and the bushing. When i did it, they didnt ask for a reciept, they just swiped some from another shock, its worth a shot if ur in a pinch.

good thing you caught that. hopefully the washer just fell out. shouldn't be a big deal since the springs still support the frame and axle. the only thing that could of happened is you over stressed the springs maybe? i remember when i replaced the rear shocks and forgot to put the rubber bushings in ..so everytime i hit a bump i would hear metal clanking..took me forever to figure it out! easy fix and felt good to get it taken care of!

Well all three local Toyota dealerships didn't have any of the parts. Looks like its going to be sitting there for a while.

My brothers 85 kept coming off no matter how tight with or with out loctite. Havnt had issues with my 98 like that though. I do know that when I was helping someone with their body lift a little while ago their shock had broke in the middle. Shock body still attached on the bottom and shaft up top and seperated. Was lucky to not have the shaft go into his nice new tires. Glad you caught it although that really isnt to bad or dangerous.

that actually happened to me, the bolts need locktite on them, mine came off when i was doing about 50 lol

Well I just checked under right after I got off work.........bolt is gone as well and one cushion and one washer. looks like i'm ordering parts soon.
