My old man has an '06 4runner, and yes I've read countless threads before starting a new one. The back hatch/tailgate is broken. The ECU works (to my knowledge) The problem relies specifically on the electronics in the dash relating the rear hatch. The rear hatch opens ONLY if you put the key in the ignition turn it to acc or on unlock the doors, and put the driver side window down and up. Crazy, I know, but this is the only way to the hatch will open.
When the key is out of the ignition and the doors lock the button on the hatch (the one under the license plate) is completly dead. When its unlocked, still dead. When the key is on, still no response from the back hatch. When the car key is turned on, nothing. When the car is turned to on, then you unlock the doors, put the window up and down, voila back hatch opens!
In lamens terms in order to get the hatch open you have to go through a series of cheat codes from Mortal Kombat with the window and lock/unlock button. Up down up down lock unlock = Rear latch FATALITY!!!!!!!!!! WINNER!!!!
Has anyone ever heard of this? I can't locate the problem, I have checked all fuses, reset the ECU's by disconnecting the batt for 30 min. and even took apart the drivers side door.
If anyone knows where the problem lies any help would be appreciated, this is a puzzle I can't piece together, and usually I'm good with this kind of stuff.
Thanks
