Rear Tire Carrier...

I've seen a couple posts for these lately and thought that was a great idea seeing how a bigger spare won't fit under the T4R with a hitch in place. So, I found this place on the web:

Anyone ever tried these products before on the 3rd gen? They've got a pic of one on a 4th Gen 4Runner...

I saw this site when I was researching for my setup.....kinda where I got the idea for installing it off my hitch. I used a totally different pivot point, but mounted it off my hitch.
 
Those swing outs interfere with your exit angle and I have heard lots of reports of rattling. Chicken, not beef, dude! Go weld yourself up a tube job with a 1 ton spindle and call it a day! :thumb3:

Or you could go after something like this:

Damn, I wouldn't run a clasp that only holds the tire on with leverage, can you put a pin through that thing?

So, thinking the tiregates were kinda cool, I called the company and got a price check. Then I promptly hung up the phone. $630 + $55 for the license plate holder + tax + shipping = ridiculous. I thought they would be $200, or $300 at the most. There's barely anything to it. I would much rather spend $1000 on a quality full swing out bumper for that price. Or take their idea and build my own "tiregate" for $30-50 in material.

crap on a stick...how do they stay in bidness? your price seems about right maybe $400 on the high end no way that should cost as much as an arb

looks good man i might just consider building my own instead of shelling out for one, with that said whats the biggest tire that will fit in the stock location?

I'm told 31 - 32 at the most. I mainly mounted mine on the back for esthetic reasons, the other.....the cable snapped from under the truck, and my spare went barrelling down a busy road! I rigged it in place temporarily, but decided to go with my current setup. I'm planning on buying a matching rim and tire combo for the spare in a couple of months.....
