rear tire carriers

I am interested in a rear plate bumper with a swing out tire carrier, and I've narrowed down my top choices to Shrockworks, CBI and Persson Motorsports... so here are my questions:

1) is the 3rd generation 4Runner frame sturdy enough for a rear plate bumper with a tire carrier (preferably swing out, although the Addicted Offroad "Lambo" design sure looks interesting now...)

2) how well do the (swing-out) tire carriers hold up over the years, i.e. do they start rattling? do the spindles bind and seize up? what are their weak points?

I have the CBI on mine. It's been on the truck for awhile. I don't see any signs of weakness on the frame. The spindle still works good. It does rattle in the dirt. I don't really notice it on the street. With the two cans filled up and the spare it adds a lot of weight and leverage to the frame when the swinger is open. I plan on addressing the issue this summer by making it a dual swinger. All in all I'm happy with it.

i just can't justify $1000+ for a bumper when i can at least try putting one together myself. i actually picked up a bumper from a utility body to cut and play around with.

Since 3rd gen 4runners have a boxed in frame, I have never heard of anyone (yet) that has bent their frame because of a custom rear bumper. I've put my bumper through hell, loaded it to the tilt and put it on all sorts of trails from California to the Canadian border. It's held up fantastically.

Every bumper is going to be different, depending on the materials used when it was made, how it was made, welds, etc. For example, my spindle has a built in zerk so it can be greased. Many do not, which means mine will probably last longer than those that are not greaseable. For the most part though, I don't see how an aftermarket steel bumper is not going to outlast the vehicle it is on, unless it is hit hard enough from the rear to destroy it. In that case though, the vehicle would probably be totaled.

Since you are considering a Persson Motorsports bumper (which is awesome!), I have nothing but good things to say about it. These guys are my great friends, very trustworthy, and will not disappoint you. If you do in fact order one, I'll be around to see it built, and can take pics of different stages of construction if you want. Hell, I might even have a hand in building it.

These guys are my great friends, very trustworthy, and will not disappoint you. If you do in fact order one, I'll be around to see it built, and can take pics of different stages of construction if you want. Hell, I might even have a hand in building it.

your thread/build is what led me to Persson Motorsports and made me even consider that one!
