Rear Tweeters Crackling

I've noticed the rear tweeters popping or crackling on my 10 speaker JBL system since I've had this vehicle. But it didn't seem to do it all the time, or with all music media (radio, CD).

Now I have isolated the noise to the rear tweeters, when:

> the volume is set above 50,
> fade to the rear over 4 or so,
> surround on,
> and mid-range turned up.


Very annoying! Anybody else have this - or can anybody else try this on their system to see if they can reproduce it?

If its crackling or popping that is a sign of them being almost blown. Speakers have a limit, even though the volume will go higher you shouldn't always max it out. Once you hear that crackling sound turn it down. It means the speaker is almost maxed out and much more abuse like that will blow it. I usually stop turning mine up at 45. Above that I can hear distortion and small pops.

I thought that too, but the front speakers make no noise, no matter how high they are turned up. I'm thinking this is a misfunction of the surround sound at certain volumes, because these are surround speakers - and it only occurs with surround sound on.

Does anyone know if the rear tweeters are the same ones they put in the front doors & dash?

Fixing sound systems is like fixing anything else you just have to rule out everything starting with the cheapest/easiest first.

Get another tweeter, even a cheap one, swap it out for one of the crackling ones and see if it fixes it. If it does then you need new tweaters.

I'm not familier with the JBL surround sound system but this being a prob with the surround sound system just doesn't sound logical. This only occuring while surround is turned on would make me suspect the amount of sound that is being sent to the speaker being increased when the surround is on, not the fact that it is on surround setting.

Everytime I have had a speaker crackle I have had to replace it because it's like Mt St Helens' bulge--it will BLOW...lol

It could be a number of things, the rear speakers might be a little lesser quality, or just not rated as high, the wiring might be different going to the rear speakers than the front, the surround might mess with things, the outputs on the headunit might not be consistent, the amp might have a little distortion to it.

It could be a lot of different possibilities, the fact of the matter is just that the sound means blown or close to blowing, you could upgrade speakers if you like it really loud, which I would probably reccommend because even if you do try to keep the volume in the safe zonet I can almost guarantee you will always end up turning it up again because you like it loud....at least that is what i do.

Probably a higher rated or higher quality speaker... Usually the speakers in front are nicer because those are the ones you can hear the best, while the ones in back aren't quite as nice becauase that is more of a "filler" sound and you don't notice a little reduction in quality over the fronts.

This could be it. Do you think it could be a warranty issue?

I was thinking about that the other day and to be honest I don't really know. This is the first car I have had that has the factory warranty and I don't know exactly what all that covers... I would doubt that it does, but at the same time I would think it would....

I noticed the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I left the sound on and opened the rear and hear a crackling/popping sound. I said "damn, no wonder the rear is not as loud as the front, the tweeters are blown" (yes I like to quote my self )

Now granted, the volume was not that loud. I shall try to replicate what you described above.

Please do! Play with the different settings, etc. I find the best CDs (digitally remastered) tend to do this more.

Try this test: keep the volume up loud with all those settings you mentioned, but turn down the midrange and bass to 0. Any crackling? Then turn them back up. Still there? I'm curious if one or both of the passive crossover components (I believe it's just a resistor and cap) are fried for some reason and your tweet is getting sent frequencies it's not supposed to handle, so if you turn the bass and mid all the way down, you might not be sending any of those frequencies and therefore might not hear any crackling - or maybe less.
