Rear view mirrow, what am I missing?

Been six months now with my new 01 4runner and I'm loving it so far. Done timing belt, water pump, belts, break pads (used wagner) and new plugs and wires due to tracing. All that being done I have just one question.

When I use the sun visor it will hit on the rear view mirror and not allow it to go all the way forward. I'm taller and when it stops there it's borderline dangerous becuase I can't see much of the road. I've tried adjusting the rear view mirror a bit but still can't get enough clearance for the visor to go all the way forward. Is this a design flaw or is there a way around it. If other don't have this problem I'm thinking the mirror might not be seated on the bracket correctly. Ideas?

Do you know if it's been replaced? Mine doesn't hit at all either, but I looked into replacing them with sun visors from a '01-'04 Taco becasue they have the extensions that slide out to the gap behind the mirror. Found out they're a little longer than the 4Runner visors.

My visors does have those extension but I believe they were added to the 4runner in 01-02.

I'll take a picture this afternoon and get the bracket as well. It def. looks the the bracket on not seated correctly but I worked with it for 30 minutes and could get it to budge.

Here they are. This is bizarre. Don't know if you can see it but the visor will not press all the way against the windshield.

It looks like you have a different mirror than stock. To my knowledge non of the 4runners had any auto-dim mirrors like that.

Nope, I bet what happened is sometime previously the windshield was replaced and whomever did the job did not measure out correctly the distance(s) for the mirror and just eyeballed it. Just look at the goop on there now. Not factory.

Either take it off yourself and buy some of the Permatex windshield replacement goo. Or go to a local auto glass shop and pay them $30 or so to refit it. They have some commercial goo that works wonders.

You should be able to measure from the exterior and see if it is centered or not, and confirm this theory. Does the passenger side visor move all the way forward without contact, and is there a gap on that side? This could very well be your solution.

I thought the 01-02 had these mirrors. I have a limited. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

This would make sense, the windshield looks brand new. However, I would have to bring the mirror WAY down for it not to hit. Can I ask a huge favor of some to measure right to center and top to bottom of their mirror bracket? I hate to ask this but I'm out of ideas.

That's a G.M. mirror with Temp/Compass, they were on all the Tahoes, Suburbans. Now they come with Onstar, I have one of those for my 4Runner just haven't mounted it yet.

Well after looking on ebay motors in disbelief you guys are right, had to see it for myself. Has anyone mounted one of these without the visors hitting?

Add, whoever installed it it looks stock.

If I remember correctly (sitting at work now) the mirror is 10.5 inches at its longest length. I have about 3/8" to spare on the right and 1/2" to spare on the left (took the measurements when thinking about putting up a JDM Hilux compass but never did).

But this is taking into account the 15 degree or so bend to the left for the driver to see out the back.

BTW, I have the same mirror in my 99 Limited.

HP is a great place to call home. However the sun likes to set and rise here about every 12 hours and this compounds the problem. :biggrin2:

Its not really a GM mirror. They were just one of the few first manufacturers to use them standard.

I'm sure that new mirror is wider then the factory one, thats probably why it hits the visors.

They are all mostly made by Gentex.

It's definitely not something a dealer would do, but many owners install mirrors with compasses, homelink, etc into their vehicles where they were never meant to be. In this case, it's too wide to properly fit. You can either live with it, or swap something else in its place.

The Toyota Southeastern Distributor in Jacksonville, not the local dealer, put the compass mirror on for the previous owner of my 4runner for $259 back in 1999. Measure the mirror and where it sits relative to the headliner and post the #s.

I am on the coast in NC, right above Elizabeth City. But I have relatives in Salisbury, Thomasville, and Greensboro, and more scattered throughout the state.

The button sits 5 inches below the headliner and centered right below where the stock mirror goes. I found if I adjust the mirror just right I can get my visor down but not the passenger side. I guess I'll have to buy the wife a new pair of sunglasses!

I travel to Elizabeth City, Moyock and Edenton quite often with work. Very nice area. I also try to make it to the Outer Banks around Corolla and do some driving on the beach when I'm there on Vacation. Very fun times.
