Rear washer/window issue

I've got the classic problem with my rear window wiper not wanting to stop running. It happened when I disconnected the battery to install some additional electronics in the T4R. I have tried all the classic methods of getting it to reset to no avail. So I'm guessing my last recourse is to install a new relay.

I have a '97 runner. Can anyone point out where the relay is located? I don't have a manual in hand, and don't want to start pulling things apart until I get an idea of it's location. Second question; how much does a new relay cost?

There is no relay, so maybe silence was the appropriate response. The rear wiper is controlled by the back door ECU, which is inside the liftgate and performs a variety of functions. Here is the wiring for a 2002:

which should be similar to yours. Read paragraph 4 on the last page to see how the control circuit works. Have you ruled out the control switch? That would be my first bet. Second would be a short in the wiring from the body to the rear door which is trouble-prone.

Honestly, if your approach to electrical work is to think up a part that doesn't exist and ask how to change it--instead of finding a circuit diagram and tracing your problem with a test meter until you have identified where the fault is--you won't be getting a ton of replies.

If I had a manual I would have done exactly as you suggested. I expected a reply reply or two to help me out, not some smartassed comment. Thanks for pointing out my stupidity by creating a part that doesn't exist. I really appreciate the kindness you have shown me by pointing out the error of my ways. Rest assured I will not make such an embarrassing mistake on this site again. Have a nice day.

The problem only began after disconnecting the battery. I will check for a shorted wire, but doubt that removing a terminal wire from under the hood will short out a wire in the tailgate.

The control switch for the wiper works for continuous and intermittant operations, also for activating the washer fluid. It does not shut the wiper off. If I push the control switch for the rear window, after a second or two, the wiper stops and the window will go either up or down. The temporary solution is to leave the window slightly ajar, but doubt that this solution will be good with the wet weather soon to arrive.

You got a 'smart-assed' comment only after you yourself made one addressed to a forum full of very helpful people. The fact that you don't HAVE a manual is no excuse for going about the problem the wrong way and then addressing your own smartass remark to the forum as a whole.

If you had just asked where to find a wiring diagram I would have been happy to help and there would have been no need for smart-assing on either side.

Good luck tracking this one down. I really hope you don't have to change the ECU as they are serious coin.
