Rear wheel studs in the front?

So I just put on some Icon Rebound wheels and the front studs are shorter than the rears. Just enough that the supplied lug nuts only get a little over 6 turns until tight. In my experience that is not enough thread engagement. From my reading the rule of thumb is you need at least the diameter of the bolt (12mm), which is 8 turns on a M12x1.5 lug.

The easy answer is to use ET lug nuts, and doing so more than doubles the thread engagement. However, Icon says that none of their wheels are compatible with ET nuts, even though they are still 60° taper acorn seat. I'm currently using them anyways, they fit and I feel better about the studs not shearing off.

The less easy answer is to use rear wheel studs in the front. I don't know why the fronts are shorter or what it may affect but using longer ones, or if they can even be directly swapped..?

I can't be the first person who has had this dilemma but I didn't find anything on a quick search.

I’m running VTX wheels. I did some research on front studs. Yes the rear are a little longer but I think I used Toyota Matrix AWD studs from around a 2006. They also use 12x1.5mm threads. I popped the old ones out and put the new ones in. It’s really easy.

I've been running rear studs in the front for many years, 230k+ miles.

I almost lost a front wheel, so I bought ARP studs, which ended up being too long. Switched to rear OE studs and no problems since.
 
I am using ARP studs in the front. You have to cut them shorter which is a pain but they are very strong. The OEM studs are known for failing when you have a sloppy tire mechanic.

Any idea how much longer these are than the rear OE 4runner studs? Why did you opt matrix as opposed to the rear oe?

I think the rears are only 5mm longer than the front. I believe the Matrix ones are 10mm or 15mm longer, not 100% sure. I just felt like why not go longer than OE rear. I didn’t go ARP because I didn’t want to cut. I sourced these from searching on here and an old thread came up with the Matrix studs as a solution.

From Rock auto information-

OEM front- 40mm thread and 45.35mm overall length
OEM Rear- 44.1mm thread and 48.8mm overall length
Matrix AWD- 55mm thread and 60.65mm overall length

So the OEM rears are not a lot longer but it gives you about 3 extra turns on the lug nuts.

One thing to keep in mind is they all also have a longer shoulder, not necessarily a bad thing but you may not be able to use them in combination with ET lug nuts. Yes I get that changing studs is a way to not use ET but thought it worth mentioning. Also with the really long ones you'd have to make sure you are clamping the wheel and not bottoming out the threads in the lug nut when tightened.
