Rear whining noise dissapeared !

FWIW, about 3 months ago I had this rear whine develop at about 60km's under gentle acceleration. My muffler was also beginning to show signs of needing replacing, which I just had done today. I asked the guys at the shop if they would give the UJ and rear wheel bearings a quick check to see it they had any play in them that could be the possible cause of the whining noise. They were all good and tight. They had the 4rnr up to speed on the ramp also and could not replicate the sound.
So I drove it home and guess what ? the whine has almost gone ! I'm thinking it most probably must have been some harmonics the old muffler was creating !
Strange but true !

A long-running whining noise from the rear diff can end with a big clunk sound, then a whirring noise, and no forward propulsion.
