Rear window rubber seal pulling away

I noticed this today in the lower right corner of my tailgate window while loading some things.

Is this a common thing with an easy fix? That would be good to know before i start poking and prodding and make it worse.

They definitely don't last forever. I ordered a new bottom one for my '03 last month to replace my worn piece when I fix my back window. It was about $25 shipped. It does not seem like a difficult swap at all.

Funny...I noticed some rubber peeling away from mine yesterday after going through a car wash.

I ordered part number 68290-35031 yesterday for about $25. From what I read, it only takes 15 minutes or so to replace.

It's too cold for me to play with it right now. With my luck, I'll break it into 12 pieces in the brittle state.

Is mine actually broken and needing replacement, or do I just need to pull it off and reinstall it correctly?

I guess what I'm not understanding is if this piece has failed or just wiggled loose.

Well, if $25-$30 bucks won't break the bank, I'd probably go ahead and replace it.

While you're at it, might want to take the inner panel off the rear door, peel the plastic up and inspect for corrosion / rust /moisture.

I see we're in the same part of the country and imagine mine started dry rotting a while back and is the culprit behind some tailgate rust I dealt with last fall. Water seeps down between the window and that bad seal into the inside of the rear door. Rust coming from the inside out is no fun. By the time you see it, it's too late.

Mine is the same but also dry rotted with cracks and missing bits across the entire window, I will be replacing it ASAP.

I'm thinking the weather strip shrinks with age and thus causing the gap, I would recommend you replace it at some point and I would also follow DEF4Runner's advise and check inside the rear hatch for possible rust while you're replacing the weather strip!

Good ideas -- somehow I never thought about the internal rust issues. I'd better get in there once the weather gets above freezing. I miss having a garage!

I noticed snow blowing out around the back window while scraping it the other day. Realized that the seal was gone.

Ordered that weather strip and a new rear wiper arm assembly as it had also deteriorated from age.

Took about 30 minutes to replace it all and that was with two young kids 'helping' me LOL.

Easy fix; lower the window; pop out the old one and pop the new one back in. I followed the service manual that said to take the interior trim panel off, but found that really wasn't necessary after I did it.

$22 for the weather strip. The low price seems to indicate it is a common replacement item.
