Rear window won't roll down

My rear window just stopped working.

Checked the switches with a volt meter and the switches are good.

Fuses are good

Pulled the panel off the tailgate and all the connectors are plugged in.

Any ideas what it could be?

When I try the switch in the cab and the key switch on the tailgate there is no sound or anything.

Believe it or not, we get threads all the time like this.

Go press your window lock button.

I'm thinking it's either the motor, control unit or a relay somewhere...I don't wanna just throw parts at this so when I get some time I may hook a battery directly to the motor and check that...

Anyone have a wiring diagram?
 
want to hear something crazy??

we had a week a couple years ago with TONS of snow... and then it got super warm and there was so much water for a few days from all the melting snow.

so all of a sudden my back window starts acting up

I would hit the up button and it would go down or not move and then I would hit down and it would go down and then i would hit up rapidly a few times and it would go up a few notches then if i hit down it would go down all the way like a driver side window would on "auto"

anyways, it acted up for a week or so and I luckily kept it up most of that time so it didnt get stuck in the down position...

then it just started working again just fine and hasnt had a problem in prob 3 years now

prob doesnt help you much, but interesting back window story...

I had my dog in the back with the rear window cracked while I ran into the store really quick and it started to pour rain. Rolled it up when I got back in the car and it hasn't worked since. That was right before thanksgiving.

Are there any other fuses then the one by the drivers knee?
 
It was pouring rain the other day and I decided to try rolling down the rear window and it worked.

I think I have a ghost in my car.
 
On my 2000 4runner I had a similar problem. I had an intermittent rear window and my back cargo light would dim to off after closing the hatch. I found a few broken wires inside the rubber covered wire loom that connects the hatch to the body. There is, or should I say was, a hard plastic restraint on the wires. I removed it, and did not put it back on, and checked the wires and found some broken wires. I fixed them and all is good. This was a few years ago and have had no problems. The wires have no problem keeping from being pinched without the plastic keeper. I believe that the keeper was putting a lot of strain on the wires. I would start there.
 
Did you ever resolve this issue? How? Mine is having some very similar problems. Motor works, but it seems to have a mind of it's own.
 
OH MAN.

so my window stopped working as well.... 4th gen here though. I used the remote to open it on my way from home depot -- put some paint cans in there.... and got in my driver's seat... and the window wouldn't roll up.

it was SNOWING out... and I was like WTF.

so I drove for a few miles freezing my ass off... then googled how to fix it.. thining I would need a new fuse.

This thread came up and I read the first response.....

the damn window lock!!! fixed it.

BOOM. thanks so much for the first response in this thread -- as I must have hit the window lock button by accident at some point.

problem solved for this idiot! thanks!
 
So I know this thread is old, but I am having a similar issue. I think I have isolated the issue though. The rubber connecter that covers the wires leaving the car and going into the rear hatch seems to be the issue. When I jiggle that rubber bundle, I can hear something clicking in the window motor. I am guessing there is a lose wire in there? Is there an easy way to take this thing off to check? I would rather not cut the rubber cover open if I can avoid it.
 
I have a similar issue, was driving a few weeks ago, window went down fine, but when going back up, about 3/4 of the way up, it stopped. it wouldnt move for a few minutes, I tried again, it moved about 1/2 inch. I had to redo this many times over the course of about 30 minutes to get it up. I have since opened and closed it fine, but always worried it will happen again.
 
The rear wiper could be the culprit. I think I read this in a post somewhere else . Make sure your switch is off for the rear wiper and that the rear wiper itself is fully disengaged and in its cradle. Hope this helps.
 
I joined the back window club. Mine just stopped working, hadn't used it in a couple of months, too cold now if I hit the switch or use the key it buzzes like it is trying and mostly will move the window down by 5mm then just keep buzzing. I took the cover and the inspection panel off everything looks to be connected all the wiring is clean, the tracks were dry with a little surface rust, I cleaned and greased those.

I checked the window lockout switch and the rear wiper and wiring where it comes into the tailgate all looks good. Anyone know what the buzzing indicates it feels like its coming from the orange relay box but could be just where it's travelling to. I don't mind throwing some used parts at it just wondering if there's an order based on what I described
