rear wiper question

First off...yes...I've used the search button.

I just bought a 97 SR5 and the rear wiper works just fine, but doesn't touch the glass once it comes out of the parked position. I'm assuming that the spring in the arm is just tired from being in the parked position all the time. I don't know how often the previous owner used the rear wiper (if at all). Is it as simple as replacing the spring or is there something else I should try?

fixed mine this summer, i took the cap off the arm where it connects to the door, and took the nut off, then wiggled the arm off...


after i got it inside i took the spring off and replaced the wiper and greased all the pivot point with some grease, as far as the spring i bent it out straight where it makes the 180 deg. bend to clip on the arm, then moved down 1/4 and inch and bent it again (basically making the spring work harder because is has to stretch more)

and put it all back together and they ya go! it works

But has anyone tried to replace the entire wiper with something like the new rain-x latitudes?

Thanks! I'll give that a try and see if it helps. It's rained nearly everyday since I bought it and the back window is starting to get a little funky and hard to see through.

Is there any way to replace the wiper? I really need a new one, mine is shot to hell. Do we have to get them from Toyota or can we get them elsewhere?

This is a great idea. Apparently the other option is to replace the entire rear arm for $30.00 (I read here but have yet to find a link online). This post will be easier to find with the following tags:

I'll try this fix tomorrow and let you guys know if I'm successful too.

BTW, it's also hard to wiggle the wiper off the post (I failed on try number one). So it's soaking overnight in penetrant, hopefully I won't have a problem with it tomorrow.

According to RonMaiden "most wiper arms are dealer only items" and someone here said they cost about $30 bucks.

You can get the inserts from Toyota and just replace the blade. I think that is the most cost effective.
