rear wiper

is it just me or the rear glass wiper design is flawed? when you pull the lever with right hand toward steering wheel, it sprays and swishes to clean the windshield. if you twist the same lever counter clockwise - it just sprays the tail window - how useful is that? normally i had to twist it counter clockwise followed by closewise for what's done for the windshield in one step (pulling the lever). i know if you twist all the way and hold it, you get both the swish and spraying, but it's inconvenient for me.

anyway, it's just tail window. we are supposed to keep focused on "the way forward"

perhaps you want to have the window a little wet before you start wiping?

yeah, i have always thought that was weird as well. inevitably, i always turn it the wrong way first. incidentally, my rear wiper has never worked that well to begin with. it has a habit of evenly distributing all the dirt that it comes across, rather than wiping it away.

Gents,

If you twist the lever to turn on the rear wiper all the way past fast speed the washer will also spray. The spray works at both ends of the twist.

I think I remember reading in the manual somewhere that it is safer to have the glass a little wet before activating the wipers, hence the spritz before the wipers' swipe. Which makes sense because you'd want to have a somewhat lubricated surface before the wiper blade travels across the glass. This would prevent any hard particles (grime or whatever sitting on the blade or glass) from scratching the surface of the window.

I must say though that I hardly use the rear wiper. The downforce created by the hump spoiler alone clears the crap off when it's raining on the highway. I sometimes turn it on just for the hell of it.

Yeah, my '96 Saturn's main wipers would spray first, then about a half second later, it would wipe.

I first thought that there was something wrong with it, but a Saturn tech explained it better to have a 'wet' glass before wiping to help prevent scratching from debris.
