Rebelbowtie's Overland Grocery Getter "build"

I wanted to start a thread to document all of my mods in one place. i wouldnt exactly call it a build but it is a documentation of my attempts to create the perfect family daily driver that i can still take off road if i choose to.

it is a 2004 SR5 v8 AWD with 93,000 miles

first we start off with the day i purchased it with a picture from my test drive

there is this little blue light that i still havent figured out what it goes too, the wires run up into the dash. i havent done much investigation but i will include it here just in case anyone has an idea what it can be

it has a crappy Alpine single din radio that i plan on changing out with a double din NAV unit

here it is at the tire shop getting rid of the pitiful Dunlop radials that were on it

and here she sits on my new BFG T/A KO's in 265/70/17 flavor

next came some 5,000K HID low beams

then armed with some plasti dip and VHT night shades i started blacking out my 'Runner

then I installed some 3,000K HID's in the fog lights

I picked up this Magnaflow muffler for $40 off Amazon.com

future mods include FJ coils and Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks, 20% tint over all of the existing tint and a roof rack of some sorts with auxillery lighting.

Any chance it had a navigation unit at some point? I think the earlier 4th gen's had a button like that for over riding the navigation screen being locked while moving. Just a guess.

its doubtful, you see that little LED to the right of it? it too has wires running into the dash under the HVAC. i am guessing i wont find out what it is until i rip the dash completely apart.

i actually too the center console apart while driving one day (not very safe) and i havent really cared too much to find out what it was since then.

my initial thought but there isnt any extra wiring or horn under the hood. i actually dont have the factory key fob or master key, i got screwed when i bought the vehicle and only recieved the valet key. the dealer has been very uncooperative in getting me the correct master key and key fob.

Maybe the PO yanked the wires and horn before selling it? :shrug: Find a free afternoon and dig a little. Thats BS you only got a valet key!

You can get a key fob for around $10 on eBay, I believe, and program it yourself pretty easily in a couple of minutes.

i looked a little while back and i could not find any that cheap. if i had i prob would have bought one.

What unit are you thinking about? My Kenwood is starting to **** the bed and i need to start looking for a new DVD/Nav.

It still could be an aftermarket security unit that uses your rig's horn instead of an extra one. Have you looked to see if there is an alarm system yet? One way to do it is to look under the hood for a contact button.

I've been following your progress with this rig. I like what you've done to it and I recall watching your video before. You've convinced me to get a new muffler!

no i havent looked for a contact switch, i have very little experience with alarm systems. i have never felt the need to have one before even on my Audi, i guess i am a little to trust worthy.

i will check it out tomorrow when i get home from work.

i havent started looking yet, but i know i want something double din, with NAV and look somewhat factory. i did see one i really liked in a build thread on this forum but forgot to book mark it.

i am open to suggestions. also the guys that have done the FJ swap are you guys getting your coils from the FJ forums?

Id start with fjcruiserforum and toyotafjcruiserforum and possibly ih8mud. It wouldnt hurt to put an add in the classified section here and on 120. Also try the FJ section of this site.
