rebuild or buy used

i recently purchased a 90 t4r v6 3.0 5speed 4x4 and wanna know what you guys think or would do in this situation ok my question is i took my truck to the toyota stealership after finding out on here that there was a recall for the head gasket. note that i thought it was blown as i had poor power oil was a lil milky and it had developed a knock(antifreeze messing up bearings) needless to say my truck has been there for a month and they just have called me to tell me that the head gaskets have apparently been changed on it at some point in the trucks life(not by toyota) and that i have a spun bearing and messed up wrist pins and that my according to the recall my truck needs the short block.... then they say the word... BUT toyota will not pay for it :happens: so im in the delima now that i gotta go get my truck and haul it home. my question is would you guys rebuild it or try to find a cheap used one. idk exactly if thats all thats wrong with it as i havent seen the motor apart.

i already have a rebuild kit that i got for a steal cuz the guy didnt need it any more and sold it to me for 100. i know my way around an engine plus my fiances dad is an ex military mechanic and is a mechanic now in his daily job. and i just wanted to get some opinions on what some of you would do or have done and any advice regardless of what i do

A used engine is always a big unknown. If you rebuild it you know what you have.

I agree with fourwd1 you don't know what your getting, even though I put a used motor in mine $1,640.00. i put new valve cover gaskets , water pump before I dropped it in. I changed the oil filter, plugs,thermostat and O rings on injectors. Fired right up and have put 2,500 miles and no poblems yet. The 3.0 does'nt have the best record with the HG issue but the one I pulled to replace had 225K and still ran, maybe a little rough but point A to short point B was n't out of its capablities.
