rebuilding motor and need ideas

so basically i jus recently bought an 85 4runner drove it an hr to get home so thought everything was great,,so i threw a 4in lift on it with 16in rims and 33 in tires.. so i was excited to take it off roading and it over heated on the way there and i blew a piston.. so here is what i have came up with im guna pull the motor and get it rebuilt for1200 but heres wat im not sure should i install a cam r something to upgrade it. r is it not worth it. any ideas on that. also im guna re do all the colling system change the radiator the fan to electric. and rebuild the tranny. and heres another question i have 33 and want to re gear for maybe 35s not sure wat i should do with that would itbe ok to regear for 35s and have 33s. and last i wanna put lockers in the back.. looking at spending 3k on this.. does any one have any ideas r can help thank you..

That stinks that you blew the engine. I guess the question is -did the engine have enough Hp for you when it was stock? If it did then I would rebuild as stock and focus on upgrading the suspension.

If it didnt have enough for you then go for it. It would be a perfect time to do it with then engine torn down to the crankshaft. Just be careful as to understand that when you replace the cam make sure you have enough valve clearance .

Yea dude its funny. Cuz I don't have the best of luck.. Well I'm having someone rebuid it for me cuz I don't want to mess it up.. but I never really had the chance to drive it other than driving it home. When I purchased it. So I don't kno about it being enough hp.. but I have never had a vehicle smaller than a v8. If I do put a cam wat kind should I go with..

Check engnbldr.com for rebuild parts. Good prices and service.
As far as regearing for 35's, 5.29's would be good if you have a 5 spd.
Figure $800+ for parts and labor if you pull the 3rds and carry them in, more if the shop removes and installs them.

As far as cams go there arent many that make them for a toyota. To be sure it fits with out head work i'd check with the mechanic that is doing the rebuild. I personaly think the stock toyota engines are plenty strong just work up the suspension .

That's a good idea keep it simple I heard it won't be that much better to up grade the cam but I wasn't sure.. some people r saying to put a 6 in and some r saying put in an 8. But that jus seems to extream and a lot. Of work for wat I want I jus want a relible and rock crawler and be able to pull a few people out if needed too..

There's a lot of aftermarket support for the 22R series engines (heads, cams, headers, etc).
If you have $$ to spend check out LCE or DOA.

If you are going to rebuild the engine, do it right. Ted at engnbldr.com is the shiz. Buy as many parts as you can from him. If he doesn't carry it, then go to LC engineering. Get as much as you can out of that 22re, but don't go insane. Cam, headers, exhaust, Valves.

On the gearing: if you plan to run 33's or 32's at times, then go with 4.88's. You can still run 35's on the street, but you won't be over geared for the 33's. If you want more pulling power, put in a doubler in your transfer case or a just a low range for your 4 Low.

In my opinion, its the best of both worlds. You can drive to the trail, wheel, and if nothing breaks, drive on home.

that sounds good so 4.88 is wat I think will be perfect for wat I'm looking for.. thanks. I'm going to throw. A 4 core radiator and install a electric fan and i recently installed.extrenal tran cooler is there any recomendations on upgrading my cooling system I don't want it ever to over heat.. lol that was miserable

Ok so in the prosess of pulling my motor because my buddy said I blew a piston.. another friend said to check my bearings so I pull the oil pan and find metal in my pan and I start to un bolt the bearing cover and the 1st couple looked alright but one of them I couldn't even find it but it looks like not only bearing was gone but wat it is up against is scratched.. is there anyway to fix that if so how.. and could there still be a blown piston it loooks fine when I was looking at it..

so are you saying that you took off the connecting rod caps and found the rod bearings had scracthed the crank shaft journals? NoT GoOD

If the crank is scratched you HAVE to take it to a shop so they can try to polish that scratch out. It may be too deep of a scratch and you will have to replace the crank.

so if I were you at this point I would get all new pistons . I wouldnt even try to find the blown piston just go ahead and plan on replacing them all with new rings. The rods and wrist pins are probably good but i would get all new rod bearing caps. Check that cylinder for piston slap when the bearing came out ..make sure it is not scratched or marred. You may have to rebore the cylinders ..if so that means oversized pisions are in your future too.

Well I was wondering if it was jus my bearings and not a rod because they look good visually.. could that be possible and ya my crank is scratched there was a whole in it real small but nothing buffing would help.. so ur saying I need to replace my crank.. is there a way to jus replace that with out rebuilding the whole motor..

well the small hole in the crankshaft needs to be there..it is an oil seep port.

as far as getting the crank out you - the only way to do it is to remove the motor from the engine bay of the car. If you are going to go that far anyway you might as well do a full on rebuild .

I dont know if you need to replace the crank but you for sure need to take it to someone who can tell you.

This thread has got me thinking about rebuilding my motor too. Or more accurately, having someone rebuild it for me (I don't have a garage). I assume rebuilding is cheaper than buying a new or already reconditioned motor & having someone swap it out?

alright so I desided and agreed on pulling the motor and getting it rebuilt.. I tryed to lable and zip lock bolts and take a lot of pictures the only thing I'm worried about is installing the wired back on..
