Recommend brand replacement speakers??

Hi, currently i am having the OEM nav with 8 speakers system. i really have no clue if that is what so called "JBL" sound system or not. there's one in the center of the dash, 2 speakers on each front door, one on each rear door and a sub in the cargo area. i am thinking to replace all doors speakers since they don't sound too good to me. any suggestion of what speakers i should replace? mainly i don't want to do any drilling for extra tweeters, so no component system for me. i've been searching online and some speakers i have in mind, "eclipse 4-way" 6X9 sounds pretty nice to me. but i couldn't match anything with the same brand for the rear. i called crutchfield and those "SPECIALIST" seems couldn't help me at all. any suggestion here will be very helpful!!!!! thank you.

I havent researched speaker sizes yet so I dont know what to tell you about the sizes. But, I have bought some speakers and head units and done some installs so I do have an idea of what I think sounds clear and crisp.

For the money, Infinity Kappa components up front would really give you a super clear sound. You have mid-bass and tweeters both in your front doors so a component set would be fine for the front doors. I'm guessing they use a 6.5" Round in the doors but I may be wrong. Round speakers always sound better than oval, because of the oval cone, it will distort much more and cause poor mid-bass sound at higher listening levels. Try to stick with round if possible. I think Metra or one of the aftermarket companies make 6X9 to round speaker adapter rings.

For the back, some Infinity Kappa Coaxial's would work great as well.

For the center speaker, of course, Infinity makes those too.


Now, if you want to spend more, MB Quart, and Focal's Kevlar Cone speakers, are simply awesome.

If you really want some kick to your sound too, add an Infinity Basslink sub in the cargo area, it's self powered. This will add some depth and kick to the music. Not like the trim rattling vato-mobiles running around town either, just clean, rich bass.



I plan to do some stereo work in my 4Runner this summer and this is sort of the direction I will be going myself. Probably all Infinity components and Basslink, with Alpine IVA-W205 head unit with two 7" screens in the headrests (for the kids : )

I'm fairly certain you will need to amp any upgraded speakers if you intend to have better sound than you are currently getting from your stock system. A simple speaker swap is not going to yield much of a difference except maybe in the thickness of your wallet.

I had the same question you did on my '05 and I bought a Scion T1806, a Kicker 250:2 and 400:1, a set of Polk Momo 6.5 comps, and a Polk Momo 12" sub. I did the install myself and the only problem I had was finding a quiet spot for the line out converter to the amps. It took a weekend and was under $1000. Wow! The Polk/Kicker combo is one clean bump!

i don't need something like premium sound, but at least sounds better than stock will be fine for me. so if a pair of polk audio component in front, and a pair of 6.5" boston acoustic 2 way in the rear and keep the stock center speaker and keep the stock sub, would that sounds better than stock and have a decent sound quality? appreciate for all the comment and suggestion.

I'll go with POLK

I have a little experience in speakers and sound qualities from my last two cars. If your sub in the back hits hard, then u need some good speakers with highs and clarity. I would go with POLK AUDIO, since they are only good for highs and clarity. For lows, like bass, you already have a sub in the cargo place, right? Now if you are looking for something thats is mixture of Highs and Lows, I would go with PIONEER. I love Pioneer the most (unless u have Subs, which i do) They are cheaper but way better.

In my 98 4Runner, i have two 12" Audiobahn subs with Boss amp, but my speakers are factory and suck big time. I am waiting to skoop up some more money to buy some Polk speakers. Good luck

My setup

I replaced my system a year or so ago with the Infinity speakers. Do not regret it a bit. Do a search for "speaker enclosures" on the site. I created a guide for replacing all of the components and adding an enlcosure to boot. I can crank the sound up with no distortion or rattling. The setup is what your discussing here, no thumping in the night.
