Recommend shocks for 2004 4runner

I am ponderiing replacing the shocks in the 4runner. Can anyone recommend a shock that will provide a quiet smooth ride. I have seen the KYB GR-2. Thanks for your assistance.

Hi aso432.....a little more info will help....do you have a Sport model? If so, you have the XREAS suspension setup which limits your options...actually, you cannot replace the shocks without removing the entire XREAS suspension. If you don't have XREAS your options are limitless.

You're saying that if I want to just upgrade the factory shocks on my 2007 V8 Sport, then I have to remove the entire XREAS to just remove and replace four shocks?

This seems like a huge labor job to do if it's the case.

I believe all you have to do is disconnect the X-reas line from the factory shock and put in the upgrade (simpler than you think). I think there was someone in this forum who did that and just taped the leftover line on the chassis or something. There's also someone who just took the whole system off the runner.

My front right and back left are shot in my 04 i have the x-reas can I or cant I just pull the shocks out and put in some new ones Please someone who has done this let me know

Yes, you can swap in regular shocks and ditch xreas, many here have done it.

I did it not too long ago to put my OW set-up in. Removal of the XREAS is not too bad or messy if you take your time and disconnect everything at the proper places. Search over on Toy120 for write-ups on disconnecting everything at the right nut. There's usually 4 nuts in a row, and if you disconnect between the middle 2, you should be ok (double check the write-ups though). If you disconnect the shock correctly, you should be able to keep the system in and just replace the shock that’s worn. Just be careful in doing so because I believe you can't replace any fluid lost, so you can ruin the system quite easily.
