Good, because that's what you'll be doing.
I know of one company that makes a square tube rear for the first gen that sorta looks like plate, but do your research before you spend any money with Tactical Armor Group (previously known as Kennesaw Mountain). Shady shady outfit.

Glad I came back to check this thread out. I did find it odd that their rear bumper looked similar to Kennesaw's version. Now I know. I'll just go ahead and delete that link from my favorites. Time to brush up on my welding skills and I think I'll take my chances on making my own or have an experienced welder help me out.

Depending on what you're thinking about building, hit up Adam at 4xInnovations. He makes a set of rear bumper mounts that are designed to work with round tube, but they could be modded for square tube or a plate design. They'd make building a rear bumper from scratch a lot easier.

Easiest bumper to make is the rear bumper, quick photo of mine:
I'll rebuild it some day, but for now it works well. 2x4 square tube, 45º angles on the ends to soften the square look, plasma cut the old brackets of the shittybuilt tube bumper I originally had and used that for the brackets, so you can see the brackets are a bit lower than I would like. I moved the tube up as high as possible so departure angle is slightly better. Cut the 2" receiver off the shittybuilt and welded that on, it doubles as license plate holder, and D-ring receiver hitch when I'm wheelin'.
What I'd do if I re-built this bumper? Use some good brackets like ones that KidV mentioned @ 4xInnovations!!! Gusset the receiver hitch for more strength. Maybe add some 1½" tube to cross to the inner part of the frame from the rear of the receiver too. And, if I had access to a plasma cutter again, maybe even cut the center of the bumper out and slide a new receiver into the bumper.
One other thing with this style bumper, you could use it as an air tank too if you weld it up well! I still plan on running air lines to my sliders and rear bumper some day to use for onboard air tanks. Probably around a gallon or 2 worth of air space in just the rear bumper I would think!

Email luke at 4x4 labs. He has been working on a plate/tube hybrid that looks just like his other rear offerings for land cruisers. I'm also looking into plate as the tube options aren't so appealing to me.
