Recommendations on new tires

Hi there,

Another question that has been asked before but any recent experiences would be appreciated.

I need new tires to replace the existing factory set. My needs are:
- mid-range cost
- quiet ride
- mostly highway driving
- once in a blue moon dirt roads (only in summer)
- can handle winter conditions (snow)

My mechanic quoted me $1,200 for BFG MTs (can't remember the exact model number) but a friend with a Tundra suggested ATs for better city/highway driving - he's got both Toyo MTs and Nitto ATs.

Any experiences/recommendations on brand/model would be helpful.

This kind of has been covered ad nausem in other areas, but for the sake of simplicity, I would say for your driving needs go with an AT, and if you're really interested in winter performance, get one with a "snowflake rating," which at least SHOULD be somewhat better in snowy conditions. Everyone here has their preferences, after doing my research I went with the Goodyear Silent Armors (255-75-17), but I am sure that Duratracks Toyos or Nittos or, others are great. Many people supposedly don't like the AT form of the one you're considering (the BFG AT) in snow, but who knows, it certainly gets high marks in other areas.

Any tire can handle dirt roads...so, i would broaden the scope to include SUV highway tires that are good in snow. Highway tires will also mean better fuel economy.

Michelin LTX M/S / M/S 2 or Cross Terrain. Both are quiet, have excellent grip in rain and snow and will outlast any other tire. Everyone I have seen and used has gone over 100k. One set of mine went 125k and my current Cross Terrains have 95k with a good 10k left on them.

Mostly highway driving and snow - BFG MT no good.. How much snow/ice? Definately need the snowflake rating if your anywhere north like me.

I run the Kumho Road Venture SAT KL61. Amazed at this tire so far. Ride, handling, light off road performance, best of all is its snow/ice performance, which I need.

Replaced the Dunlops with Yokos Geolander ATs. Get about 1mpg less but for me it is worth it for my use. At the time they were one of the cheaper AT tires. Tire Rack seems to have some of the better prices.

Then Passenger tires all the way (as opposed to Light Truck). Based on your list, the BFG MT recommendation is very odd. Nitto Terra Grappler and Toyo Open Country (in P), both great bang for the buck but not as quiet as a non A/T tire. Not bad, though.

One thing to add. A/T is a designation that applies to the tread, so it can be P or LT.

I have a better understanding now... I never knew about the "P" or "LT".

I'm going to get quotes for the Michelin LTX MS Nitto Terra Grappler and Toyo Open Country. Tough I think the Nitto's looked the most aggressive!
