recovery strap

I am thinking of getting one in case I might need it one day.

Need some help choosing....

Does this one seem to fit the job description??

I have two... one is a "Superwinch" rated at 20,000 lbs, which is always in the 4Runner, and the other is a "Pro Comp" rated at 40,000 lbs that I'll throw in for off-road trips. I'd always rather have something over-rated in situations like this. There are also "snatch straps" that are good to have and they are quiet different... they're meant for yanking, not just pulling, someone out of a tough spot. They actually stretch to absorb impact. These guys have a nice selection and are quite experienced... Results for Recovery Gear

Bottom line, I'd probably look for something with a higher capacity than the strap that you referenced. Something like this maybe as a minimum (seems like a good price, too) Amazon.com: Highland Nylon Towing Recovery Strap Nylon Recovery Strap w/ Loop Ends (25' x 2") (17,000lbs): Automotive

thx for the info, but isn't 25' too much strap? what if I need to recover some one is no further then 5-10 feet for instance??

I've looped my strap before in a couple of situations, but I don't really want to be that close to someone I'm "unsticking"!

Yea, you really do not want to be closer than 25-30' when doing a recovery. this is not like towing someone down the road. Really important to have shackles to connect also. I have seen some real comical (no one hurt) situations up hunting by people acting stupid when trying to get someone unstuck, espeically when drinking is involved so be safe and smart

thats what i thought just wasnt sure if by looping i was going to compromise the strength of the strap....

I believe if you purchase a kinetic snatch type strap you DO NOT want to get it with a higher duty rating than necessary. The idea of the kinetic strap is to stretch, reach its operating length limit and snap back to yank the vehicle free. If you try one that is rated for more than the real load it doesn't stretch properly.

Dont' go cheap on a strap. I've had numerous friends break the cheap walmart straps. I've broken a superwinch strap, but it takes A LOT more effort to do so.

If you are only going to get one strap, don't go with the kinetic as you only want to use them with experienced off roaders. For the majority of recoveries of your vehicle or other, you want to go slow and easy - L4 with center diff locked to avoid wheel spin.

I've always been a fan of kinetic straps even if pulling slow. Chain or regular rope is not a good idea as it has NO give in it.

Make sure the strap has loops at the end. The cheapos have hooks. Put the strap into your receiver hitch and lock it in with the tow pin. Then the other end gets shackled to who ever you are getting unstuck.

It's okay to tug a bit, the strap is designed to stretch, then pull the truck out. Just a nudge, you shouldn't be "yanking" against the strap.
